TiVo addiction

We recently got a DVR (digital video recorder) from our cable company and I must admit that it's nice to have. Hubby, however, is the real addict.

This article highlights the growing phenomenon of TiVo addiction; I particularly enjoyed the following quote:

Quote:
"People who do not understand how important TV is, start talking in the middle of a show," said Doug Smith, a human resource specialist in Cleveland, Tenn. That is no longer a problem for Mr. Smith, who won a TiVo in an essay contest. "I wrote that I needed a TiVo to be a good husband," he said.

Re: TiVo addiction

This isnt available to us where we currently live, but once we move, it is an option from Time Warner. I can't wait!

Re: TiVo addiction

Not available? GACK! I'm just patiently waiting for the husband to give me the go-ahead. I read someplace that units should be free from DirecTV within the next year or so. Of course, there's the $5 a month on top of the regular bill but from what I know about TiVO it's not a big deal at all

Re: TiVo addiction

We do not currently have cable or any TV reception whatsoever, but when we do get it (within the next six months or so), I am insisting on having a DVR as well. My husband likes watching TV more than I do, and I hate it when I want to go do something or am talking to him and he starts to withdraw because a show is coming on. I'd rather have the DVR (he had one when he was in Syracuse and I was in Amherst) so he can watch the program he wants to see later and we can go do something fun together without planning around the TV schedule.

Re: TiVo addiction

I have two dual tuner TiVo's. I can record 4 different shows at once, while watching a fifth line on my HD tuner. You can say I'm hooked. I can't understand how people watch live tv anymore - I go nuts.

Re: TiVo addiction

You can also set up your computer as a DVR for about half the cost of a TiVo.

PM me if you'd like instructions.

Re: TiVo addiction

Well aware of the computer option of DVR. But I've told the hubby that I am less than interested in having ANOTHER damn computer in my house...he just brought home three more. One will be returned to the rightful owner while the other two will remain in my house. That brings the total up to, uh, a dozen? All are mounted in a rack in the basement. Not nice at all. The DVR, TiVo, etc... I'll get will be integrated nicely into the stand we already have because it will (nicely) replace the DirecTV receiver we already have...

JT (the husband) keeps on bringing plans to me with info about making his own DVR. I'm just afraid plans for another computer would end up as part of my entertaiment system instead of filed away in the recesses of the basement.

Re: TiVo addiction

I bought Tivo for my husband for his birthday about 2 1/2 years ago.

I can't understand how people could possibly plan their lives around TV. To me, TV is something you watch at times when there's nothing else to do. There are a few shows I like, but I can take or leave them at any time.

Not so my husband. There are certain shows he loves, and having Tivo allows him to record them automatically each week and relegate TV watching to the empty time slots (rather than relegating other, more important activities to the empty time slots.)

I am a lot happier. It's the best birthday gift I've ever given him.
