| | Don't drink and read...oh n'er mind, go ahead! | | When this forum first opened, we talked about what positions we liked to be in when we read and on what types of furniture.
What do you drink when you're reading?
I'll never forget the experience of reading "Dune." Herbert did such an awesome job with his descriptive detail that I was thirsty the whole time I read the book. I must have drank three gallons of water while reading that book.
When I read parenting books, I somehow feel I have to drink milk--and do it in great quantities.
Fantasy novels and novels of the absurd are best absorbed with Kool-aid or Vernors.
Then there are some books that seem to beckon to the wine cabinet and are best read with a glass of Riesling or Cabernet Sauvignon.

| | Depends, in my case, not on what I'm reading, but why I'm reading.
If it's the 500th re-read of Boswell or Gibbon or Mattingly's The Armada or Gissing's Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft, I might have a snifter, or a glass of port, or some decent sherry or madeira.
If it's something I don't in essence know by heart, and I have any valid, non-escapist reason for reading it - or even if I don't - it'll be iced tea or Diet Dr Pepper or H20.

| | I love java sweet and hot,
Whoops, Mister Moto, I'm a coffee pot
Shoot me the pot, and I'll pour me a shot,
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, a cup!
Aaaahhhhh....
When I curl up with a book, I also like to curl up with a hot, steamy Columbian. |

| | There is something about reading a newspaper while enjoying my morning coffee, but, other than that, I try not to combine eating or drinking with reading.
Why? As a child, my Mom always told me that we shouldn't, particularly if using library books or textbooks.
And of course one of the #1 rules of the diet gurus is not to combine eating with other activities, the theory being that if you enjoy the experience of eating without other distractions, you won't feel compelled to do too much of it. |

| | Frazzledspice: just get a cup with a cover. I use them extensively, especially around my laptop (of which the motherboard was fried when my cats decided to fight and spilled a cup of tea all over it).
Tea, tea, and more tea. I usally have a bottle of water on hand as well, but I consume tea at a faster rate.

| | I don't have a favorite food or beverage to consume for reading for the same reason that I don't have favorite music to listen to while reading. When I'm reading a good book, I'm so absorbed in it that I lose track of my surroundings. Food or drink would only be a distraction, and the act of eating or drinking just gets in the way of reading.
I do like to read the paper at lunch, but that's just to give me sometime to do while eating as oppposed to trying to complement the reading experience.

| | Me too. The world totally goes away when I read and I live and breathe whatever I am reading. If I have music or the television on I no longer hear it. If the phone rings I don't usually hear it. I once read through a fire alarm.
The only exception to this is when I read on a train because it tends to make me dizzy after a time so I stop. Luckily this usually happens a minute or two before my stop. However, I have several times been well past my stop before I looked up and had to go back in the other direction.
