EA's New Book Club - May 2004 - East of Eden, by John Steinbeck

I am happy to announce the first round of our new EA book club. Each month we will select a book. Anyone interested in participating can read the book, and at the end of the month we will open a new thread for book discussion.

We will officially start on May 1st, but in anyone is interested in getting a head start, our first book will be John Steinbeck's East of Eden. I've already started this book and am really enjoying it.

If you'ld like to participate in our East of Eden discussion, get a copy of the book, read it by the end of May and let's all have some fun.

Please post your name in this thread if you'd like to participate in our discussion. When we know who is participating, we'll assign people to future months and everyone can take a turn choosing that months reading.

Since I chose the first book, I'll supply food for our book discussion party.

Hope a lot of you will participate. This could be fun!

(Dad will be so pleased. Steinbeck is his favorite author.)

At least, I will try. I am notoriously bad at getting through the books that we're all "supposed" to read. With the exception of, go figure, Shakespeare.

Don't worry, Melanie. It's supposed to be fun - not an assignment. If you read it, great - if you don't - it's not like you're going to fail or get suspended.

Re: EA's New Book Club - May 2004 - East of Eden, by John Steinbeck

Oh, I know! Which might mean that I will actually read it. I just always hated being *told* what to read. My bit of passive-aggresive rebellion, I guess, considering that I love to read.

I absolutely refused to read Gulliver's Travels in High School and still managed to get a "D" on the essay/test on it.

Well, I checked this book out from the library last night and read the first paragraph! I'm off to a running start.

Oh, and it's really good so far.

LOL! If you liked the first paragraph, you'll probably enjoy the next few chapters!

I had a dream last night about looking for this book at either a library or a bookstore. (Couldn't tell where I was.) Does that count for getting started?

:book: Hey! Ailsa put us on the calander!!! I feel like our little club is really "official" now!!!

I'm reading so slowly these days - glad I gave myself extra time. I'm a bit more than halfway through, and I'm really liking this book. Hope all of you are too!

For those of you who haven't signed up yet - its a great novel and there is plenty of time to join us. The more the merrier!

Hey, I think I'll try this. Oprah did this book first for her new book club and I didn't participate, so now's my second chance!
