EA Book Club June 2004: Watership Down, by Richard Adams

There it is... Watership Down, by Richard Adams. Picking just one book is a tough choice, and there were so many I would've liked to put up for the book club selection... *sigh*

But hopefully, there'll be more rounds of the book club and more opportunities!

It is a tough choice, isn't it!

You made a wonderful one, though. I remember reading this ages ago, but I don't remember much about it, so I'll look forward to reading it again.

I'm crossing my fingers because I hope people will like it, and that most people haven't read it or don't remember it. That's the hard part...trying to balance what I thought people will enjoy vs. what will be available in libraries/bookstores but isn't so popular that everyone's read it already!

I have read most of the classics, being an English major, and must say this was always a favorite. Good choice. Leslie

Yeah! I've been meaning to read that for ages, but haven't gotten to it yet!
I'm looking forwards to it!

Tharn.

Like the rest of you, I remember reading this years ago, but have forgotten most of the story. Good choice.

Sounds interesting! I know it's about rabbits, but that's all I know.

Just one problem - if we start reading it, will the membership of our book club multiply?

Oh - if anyone wants to buy a copy and is too lazy to shop around, I just ordered from overstock.com. They have the paperback for $6.89 and also the hardcover.
I could probably shop around and get it cheaper, but it was fast and easy and if you order 3 items the shipping charges are very reasonable.

I read this book on the plane to Egypt when I was 18 years old. I think my copy is still in a cabinet in the apartment in Egypt It's a really good book and a good choice.

Oh, good! I feel a lot better now about the selection.

FWIW, Amazon's got paperback copies for $7.99 new and starting from .49 used:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...127116-0371221

And Half.com has copies listed starting from .75 for the paperback edition:

I've never read it either. I'm hoping the university library will have a copy, but I'm not holding my breath.

Haven't read it either. We like them long it seems, hehe. I've heard good things about it, though, and welcome the challenge, ariane.

It may be long, but it's very light reading. I finished it before the plane trip was over.

Got a copy. This might work out well for my trip to Madison next weekend.

Some of you will understand why I'm doing this: because I checked Watership Down out of my local library today. I got two other books too. Didn't want to push my luck with any more

 Good for you!

I actually managed to snag it from my library, too. This isn't cause for because I owe a zillion dollars in fines; rather, my library is notorius for not having any book I'm specifically looking for at the time I'm looking for it. (For some weird reason, this is especially true if it's a first volume of some series - they almost never have #1 of anything and it drives me NUTS.)

I haven't picked it up yet. I took a break with two pieces of trash (Dan Brown and James Patterson ) but I'll have those done this weekend and make a trip to the library.

I got mine at the library this week. If today is slow at work I'll have a chance to get a good start.
