What book am I thinking of?

We were just talking on the chat and I thought of this book I can't really remember. Can you guys help me figure out what it is?

Here's what I remember:

> i read a book from scholastic in the early/mid 1980's
> it was part of a three part series
> it was time travel
> a girl, or a girl and a boy
> the portals were a pile of rocks
> i want to say 5-6th grade age
> but that could be wrong
> the third book in the series went into the future
> the second back to the old west
> (kinda like back to the future in reverse)
> i really liked them all, but the third book was particularly good
> the first book had a dilapidated old house
> the pile of stones/time portal was in the basement
> the house was schedules to be demolished
> that's all i remember (more than i thought i remembered)

Anyone have any ideas? I remember really enjoying these books especially the third and I'd love to read them again.

Janice

It's been years and years since I read them, so I am probably all wrong...but might this be Ursula LeGuin's series? A Wind in the Door, A Wrinkle in Time, and...something else. Wonderful books, sounds like time to read them again.

You are thinking of Madeline L'Engle's time travel series. The third book is A Swiftly Tilting Planet, one of three books I'd demand if I were to be forever stranded on a desert island (the other two are Flatland by Edwin A. Abbott and Death Be Not Proud by John Gunther). Definitely go read them, especially STP.

Unfortunately the series I am looking for is much more obscure.

Thanks for trying!

If you are thinking of L'Engle's series, there are actually a few more books about the family than just the trilogy. The one I can think of right now features Sandy and Dennys (the twin brothers) and is called Many Waters.

I am not looking for L'Engle books. I have read all of them. There are actually more than four books - there's also An Acceptable Time and others as well as a few books that mix the Austins and Murrys.

To reiterate:

I am looking for a Scholastic book tgat meets the description outlined in the first post. See it for full details remembered, but the gist is either a girl or a girl and boy who time travel through portals that look like a pile of rocks. It's three books and the second goes to the old west and the third to the future. From the very early 80's.
