there's something going on here I can't explain... | | I'm talking about songs you hear that give you the feeling there's something else going on other than what's being sung. You know the lyrics, it's obvious what the song is about, but maybe it's the music or the way it's being sung or a combination of both that gives it a different feel.
For example (for me): "Candyman" by the Grateful Dead. Go find it and listen to it.
The narrator comes up to some town from Memphis and basically shacks up with one of the local lovelies and wins a lot of money from the local men in gambling. There's a person there he doesn't like and would like to shoot, but seemingly doesn't. And that's basically the whole song.
But when the kinda spooky chorus comes in: "look out, look out, the candyman/ here he come and he's gone again..." I always have the feeling that something darker is going on.
