I'm talking about songs you hear that give you the feeling there's something else going on other than what's being sung. You know the lyrics, it's obvious what the song is about, but maybe it's the music or the way it's being sung or a combination of both that gives it a different feel.

For example (for me): "Candyman" by the Grateful Dead. Go find it and listen to it.

The narrator comes up to some town from Memphis and basically shacks up with one of the local lovelies and wins a lot of money from the local men in gambling. There's a person there he doesn't like and would like to shoot, but seemingly doesn't. And that's basically the whole song.

But when the kinda spooky chorus comes in: "look out, look out, the candyman/ here he come and he's gone again..." I always have the feeling that something darker is going on.

I'd say every other Dave Matthews Band song, but that's just because I hear them all the time. Take "Grace is Gone" - it sounds like it is about a girl breaking his heart, but it's really about the death of his stepfather...

I posted this somewhere else, kind of along this same line:

Staind's song It's Been a While.

It's sounding like a man, having conquered drugs apologizing to a person that he loved & hurt by his addictions.

Or, it is a man singing to the addiction that caused the troubles, but he's forgiving the addiction/falling back into the addiction?
