Best (American) Patriotic Songs

MSNBC lists their top picks....how about you?
Quote:
“America,” Neil Diamond
“God Bless the U.S.A.,” Lee Greenwood
I know, this is probably anti-American but I really, really hate these two songs. And they are played at every fireworks display, every Fourth of July celebration....they make me want to rip my ears off.

What's missing? Well, IMO, from a strictly musical perspective, where is any rendition of any of Sousa's marches?

Re: Best (American) Patriotic Songs

Strange List. I like some of ths songs, but don't think of them as "patriotic". "What's Going On" is my favorite song on the list, but I don't think of it as a Patriotic Song, it's an anti-war song. And "American Pie"? Love the song, but take it off the list. Love the S&G song, but again - Patriotic? I guess when I think Patriotic, I'm thinking of the old ones like "She's a Grand Old Flag".
As far a Lee Greenwald's song goes. I didn't like it before 9/11. After 9/11 it REALLY grew on me.

Re: Best (American) Patriotic Songs

Oh, Lynn, I'm with you. I can't stand the Greenwald song. It just rubs me the wrong way. Other patriotic songs will bring tears to my eyes, that one makes me want to scratch my eyes out.

Re: Best (American) Patriotic Songs

"This Land is Your Land", has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid.
But I too, when thinking of patriotic, think of the old traditional ones--

Re: Best (American) Patriotic Songs

While perusing the 'New Post' subject headings, I read 'Best (American) Patriotic Songs - The Itsy Bitsy Spider.

Now I must admit that I love the spider song. I even did an eleven minute production number with it in one of my films, but I never thought that spiders were all that patriotic. Crickets, perhaps...

Re: Best (American) Patriotic Songs

Thankfully they’re no longer playing Greenwood’s song at baseball games. That got really old after a very short while.

Re: Best (American) Patriotic Songs

"American Pie"

Aside from having "America" in its title, how the hell did that trite, melodramatic and self-absorbed piece of crap make any list of "best patriotic songs"?

Grrrrr...

Re: Best (American) Patriotic Songs

I don't like the Greenwood song much, but it is hard to dispute that it is one of the great American patriotic songs.

Re: Best (American) Patriotic Songs

I always liked "America" by Neil Diamond. "This Land is Your Land" brings back fond memories.

Re: Best (American) Patriotic Songs

"This Land is Your Land" reminds me way too much of "It's a Small World After All" in that annoying Disney sort of way.
