Favorite book--this summer only

I often think that asking someone to choose their favorite book of all time is akin to asking a mother to choose her favorite child.

So, I'll ask this instead: What was the best book that you've read this past summer (say, since the end of May, we'll take a little overlap with spring)?

I re-read some great books this summer, but I'll eliminate those since they weren't new readings. Even then, I'm having trouble picking between two books, so I'll cheat:

My favorite adult novel was Mike Gayle's Mr. Commitment.

My favorite young adult novel was Lloyd Alexander's The High King.

The Autobiography of Foudini M Cat. But, I'm going to the bookstore, so that might change

Feh, I know I'm me mum's fave, though I can't understand why she won't acknowledge it...

Fave new author, courtesy of the kosberger—José Saramago.

Favorite new read was Vonnegut's The Sirens of Titan—dunno how I missed it the first time around.

Favorite reread was Taran Wanderer, mainly since I enjoyed its tale so much more than the first time around over a decade ago, when I thought it was slow as muleasses and I couldn't wait to get to the last in the series, The High King, and I think it's a filthy stinking shame that Bridgette still hasn't posted epinions on that and The Black Cauldron... it's a stinko pinko plot, I tell you, she doesn't want people to learn that there are far better alternatives to the Hogwarts hogwash, the harridan!

:p

I thought this would be an easy question to answer because I thought I'd read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon before May. Alas, I read it in that merry month.

I came here loaded with an easy answer: Peace Like a River by Leif Enger (look for it in stores in September). Instead, the ONLY answer can be Mr. Chabon's masterpiece.

Peace Like a River comes in second by a whisker, though.

The Best of Jackson Payne, by Jack Fuller, which NFP recommends in a review with contagious enthusiasm and his trademark insight and polished prose.

Hmmm, favorite new read would have to be Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine.

Favorite re-reads:

1) Eon by Greg Bear. What an awesome hard science science fiction book. I even splurged and bought meeself an electronic copy.

2) The Gods Themselves by Isaac Asimov with the most original and credible non-humanoid aliens ever brought to life.

I re-read a few Lloyd Alexander and Narnia books as well, which are always wonderful.

Favorite book I've been dying to re-read but can't find even though I own three copies: A Swiftly Tilting Planet by Madeline L'Engle.
