Hall of Fame inductees: Predictions?

New inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will be announced next month. Bands or individuals whose first music was released more than 25 years ago are eligible. The rules state that no more than seven acts are inducted each year, although many years there have been more.

A list of previous inductees: http://www.rockhall.com/hof/allinductees.asp

My guess is that this year's class will be: U2; the Pretenders; the O'Jays; Lynyrd Skynyrd; Percy Sledge; Conway Twitty; and Randy Newman.

Other possibilities include Patti Smith, the Sex Pistols, the J. Geils Band, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.

Any guesses?

Re:(1)Hall of Fame inductees: Predictions?

Interesting thread. U2 seems a lock. It's interesting that the O'Jays aren't there already -- I'm guessing they're still not in this class. I like the rest of your picks, especially Conway Twitty and Randy Newman since they are voted on by music business people, not fans.

I still think that The Sex Pistols are vastly overrated so they're out in my book too.

I kind of like the Grandmaster Flash pick. I'll sub them in for either Percy Sledge or Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Are The Cars in yet? I guess they're on my mind because of that damn Circuit City ad.

Your old music cannot sustain you through a life, not if you're someone who listens to music every day, at every opportunity. You need input, because pop music is about freshness, about Nelly Furtado and the maddeningly memorable fourth track on a first album by a band you saw on a late-night TV show. And no, that fourth track is not as good as anything on Pet Sounds or Blonde on Blonde or What's Going On, but when was the last time you played Pet Sounds? - Songbook by Nick Hornby

You might think . . . but nope, not yet. Their first release was in 1978 so they are eligible. And deserving, I think.

Part of the reason Cleveland was selected for the museum is that the city has a vibrant music scene. Benjamin Orr of The Cars is from Cleveland so there is just one more reason to pick them.

And now I have that damn Circut City song in my head too. Thanks a lot.

Re: (3) Hall of Fame inductees: Predictions?

Okay, perhaps no one cares about this. Just in case people do, here are some other acts that are eligible:

Women
Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon, Patti LaBelle, Linda Ronstadt, Donna Summer

Men
Lou Reed (solo: He's in with The Velvet Underground.), Peter Gabriel, Peter Frampton

Bands
Heart, Van Halen, Kansas, Boston, Foreigner, Yes, Rush, Blondie, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Chic, Kiss, Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Genesis, Commodores, Spinners, America

Re: (4) Hall of Fame inductees: Predictions?

Ahhhh, the complete list. I'm changing my votes.

Carly Simon has been eligible for years -- wonder what's up with that?
Lou Reed solo? Hmmmm. Tricky. I would take Gabriel instead
Genesis - first for the prog rock and then for the Top 40
Van Halen is tempting, but they were Eddie and a few songs. No.
Foreigner, Boston, Kansas, Styx, all the power pop bands -- ain't happening.
Chic is an interesting choice if only for the production values.

Okay, I"m ready now:

The Cars, Conway Twitty, Grandmaster Flash & FF, U2, Peter Gabriel, The O'Jays.

Watch -- I'll get 'em all wrong except U2.

I would love it, absolutely love it, if Conway Twitty was in the R&R HoF. Hell of a voice, underappreciated in his time.

I'll go out on a long limb and predict Heart, Kiss, Patti Smith, and U2. Rush, Yes, BOC are long shots, but I'll throw their names out.

Conway Twitty's not a rocker...why is he even on the list? (Great singer, remarkable legend, but NOT a rocker.)

KC and the Sunshine Band? Pullleeease.

Lynn

Well, it's not an official list. I just thought that because Johnny Cash is in, Conway Twitty might be inducted as well.

The museum's definition of rock and roll is rather broad. Al Green is in, as are Parliament-Funkadelic and other acts that sound quite different from, say, The Who or AC-DC.

The Carpenters have as much of a chance of being inducted as Yes does -- and Karen and Richard sold a lot more albums.

I'm sticking with my list.

Re:(1)Hall of Fame inductees: Predictions?

Welp, here are your 5

U2, The O'Jays, Percy Sledge, The Pretenders and Buddy Guy

Quote:
NEW YORK (AP) -- Irish rockers U2, R&B singers The O'Jays and soul balladeer Percy Sledge are among five musical legends to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during the foundation's 20th annual induction ceremony next year, the organization announced Monday.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation will hold its induction ceremony March 14 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan.

U2, which became one of the planet's most popular bands in the 1980s with their megahit "The Joshua Tree," is still making the charts: Their November release, "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb," is the No. 2 album according to Billboard.

The O'Jays had eight No. 1 R&B hits during the 1970s and '80s, including "Love Train" and "Use Ta Be My Girl." Sledge will forever be associated with "When a Man Loves a Woman," one of the songs that made him a figure in deep Southern Soul in the late 1960s.

The Pretenders and blues guitarist Buddy Guy will also join the organization's Class of 2005.

The artists beat out an impressive list of nominees including Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, which would have been the first rap group to be inducted; "Centerfold" singers the J. Geils Band, and the late country singer Conway Twitty.

Thanks for posting the final results, Sooner.

Buddy Guy is featured in a new movie, Lighting in a Bottle. He certainly deserves induction.
