I used to watch every episode, now I only watch about a third of them. In the recent hip-hop episode when Serena was fired, she asked if it had anything to do with her being a lesbian. I had no idea that she was. Had this come up in an earlier episode or episodes that I missed or did they just through that in when it had nothing to do with previous plot lines? |

| | Complete suprise, but why? If she's off the show, and they're not going to make it a plot discussion, it seemed kind of dumb. Who cares if she's gay or not? Unless they get a gay rights law suit or something, I didn't see the point. |

| | Well if they do, and if they can make it interesting and make a point, ok. Not sure how they'll do that without sounding pedantic. |

No, I cannot recall ever hearing this, and neither did my husband, and I swear he's caught every episode.
I think the writers are just being a bit crazy and trying to get some heat back into the show, IMO.

| | Well, Serena isn't sleeping with Jack, therefore she MUST be a lesbian. QED.

| The good people at Television Without Pity pay a lot of attention to such matters and according to them, the character's orientation never came up in any episode before this one. The closest any of them can remember is when Serena mentioned in passing that someone she knew in school was a lesbian.
The TWP folks seem uniform in their belief that the last-second revelation was pointless and absurd. They even changed the name of their Law & Order thread to make fun of it: http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/index.php?showtopic=592809&pid=2407470&st=3825&
That thread contains a link to a site that sells "Is it because I'm a lesbian?" t-shirts. Apparently the nonsensical and non-sequitor inquiry has become a catch phrase of sorts. | | |
