I'd be more interested if it didn't have the contrived emotion and lowest-common-denominator plots that infest ALW's work. The man has made his fortune taking great subjects and authors (The life of Jesus, Victor Hugo, Elliot, Eva Peron-to name just a few) and making them small. He is to theater and writing what Chicken McNuggets are to food.
I missed this thread first time through, but it reminded me of why I love Brian so much!

Re Phantom of the Opera

JCS is so-so, at least I can stand it in places. However, I do wish somebody would give him an additional meoldy or two- using the same ones over and over and over and OVER in each muscial get way past tiresome and well into "Kill it now, or give me pins to stick in my eyes!" territory. 'Phantom' is the worst of the lot in that respect.

Cats - Love the animals, HATED the musical!
JCS - sorry. Didn't like it. And I saw it with.....that long haired blond rock star that magenta is in love with. Still didn't like it.

Re Phantom of the Opera

Reviving old thread.

Don't tell Mom, but I finally got around to watching this (it was a Christmas gift) tonite. I loved it...but I have to agree with the general assessment of Gerald Butler - not a great singer and the part demands it. I also agree that he's too good looking - I didn't have shock and revulsion at his unmasked face like I thought I would.

But even Jeremy liked it (except for the kissing parts, he turned his face ), sort of. He seemed pretty riveted at some points, a little bored at others.

I hadn't heard any of the music before, BION, and I really enjoyed it. Now to get the CD before my trip next week.

Re Phantom of the Opera

Yeah, I live in a freaking cave. You'd think with my background, my involvement in music, that I'd know it. I think I was scared off by Cats, which I hated. Even hated the music to it.

Weddings I go to either have Ave Maria or country crap. I don't think I've ever heard All I Ask of You ever performed at a wedding.

Re Phantom of the Opera

Yay, now Lynn's sucked into the POTO phenom! But do give the original Broadway version a try, you will love Michael Crawford MUCH better than Butler.

And if you want to see Butler in something else, try Timeline.

Re Phantom of the Opera

LOL. I had "Keeper of the Stars" at my wedding. One of my friends does a beautiful non-country version of it that is so different that the first time I heard the original I had no clue it was the same song!

Let me see... Sunrise, Sunset. All I Ask of You. Whole New World from Aladdin. The Rose. Those are the ones I can do in my sleep.

Re Phantom of the Opera

I didn't know Whole New World was that popular for weddings. I sang it one time at a friend's wedding when i was younger and thought it was a unique choice. I've never heard "All I Ask of You" at a wedding either.

Me, under rock #2.

Re Phantom of the Opera

Oddly enough, Erin was attempting to sing the title song today, even though I haven't played any of the music in quite a while. There's nothing quite like a 7 year old girl singing a song intended for a (baritone? tenor? I can't remember) in an attempted bass voice, and singing the wrong words to boot. That'll wake you right up!
