| | OK everyone,
I felt it necessary to take a moment and give a plug to the Phantom of the Opera movie.
GO SEE IT!
I have seen the Broadway production 3 times, including a production with Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford and as you know, my wife is a professional singer as well, mostly Broadway-style musical theater and opera, so we both are very picky. We were both highly impressed with the movie prodution.
There are many in our circle who complain about Gerald Butler's singing (the Phantom), but his rougher texture- rock tenor, seemed to fit his personality.
Emmy Rossum is the best Christine I have ever heard.
We have seen it twice this week and for sure will be going back again!
I am sure some Phantom purists will be quick to trash my opinion; have at it. |

| | I liked "Phantom" except for Gerald Butler's singing.
There is something about a beautiful tenor voice that can break your heart. When Raoul and Christine were singing, "All I Ask of You," while the Phantom sang softly in the shadows, I kept thinking of how I cried the two times I saw the play (in St. Louis and on Broadway) and how I didn't feel moved to cry then.
And it was because Gerald Butler didn't have the voice that would break your heart.
On the other hand, my daughter thought he was a real hottie, much cuter than Patrick Wilson.
It will definitely appeal to the younger crowd. |

| | I heard there is a brief mooning incident, but I don't know if it's a guy or girl - maybe that will entice him?
Thanks, Matthew, I've been wondering what "average people" think of it! I'm dyyyyyyying to see it! Quote: |

| | Oh, I forgot about Phantom! I meant to go over Christmas break and haven't yet! I've seen the play once on Broadway and once on tour, so I've got some pretty high expectations. Maybe I can convince hubby to go with me this weekend.

| | Rora and I tried to go over the holidays but our timing was off and we ended up seeing Kinsey instead. We knew we wouldn't be able to drag our guys to go see it.
Thank you for the reminder. I'll have to see whether it is still in the theaters!

| | I probably won't get to see it in the theatre but I'm definitely putting this down on my DVD wishlist. I've seen Phantom on the stage and can imagine how well it would translate to film.

Tell Brian there is sword fighting and beautiful women in skimpy outfits. | I'd be more interested if it didn't have the contrived emotion and lowest-common-denominator plots that infest ALW's work. The man has made his fortune taking great subjects and authors (The life of Jesus, Victor Hugo, Elliot, Eva Peron-to name just a few) and making them small. He is to theater and writing what Chicken McNuggets are to food.

Did ALW do any Hugo? Les Miz wasn't ALW!
And I'll bet you secretly like McNuggets! |

And I'll bet you secretly like McNuggets! | I bet even Thomas Keller secretly loves McNuggets. Sometimes you have to not think like a critic and just enjoy the spectacle. |

Teach me for reading too fast.
Wormie, I have an idea. I'd like to see Phantom as well.

Actually, I really like ALW. For all his crass commercialism, I love the music.
And Les Miz is NOT ALW.
