Mystery series set in Boston?

I read the first book in a series a few years ago and can’t for the life of me remember the book’s name or author. The protagonist is a just-barely-making-enough-money-to-not-starve private investigator and his sidekick is his former lover. There were some missing documents and I think his car got shot up downtown. Ring any bells?

Hmmm. If nobody here can help you, try www.abebooks.com I found out last night that they have a "Book Sleuths" forum which is just for these kinds of questions.

I did some more Googling and figured it out. A Drink Before the War by Dennis Lehane.

You found it before I could get to this thread.

I love that series. Mystic River was good, too, but I really liked the Kenzie/Gennaro series. Funny - it's been so long since he's written one and I didn't mention them in our "series" thread. What a dope!
