Mary Higgins Clark wanna-bes

My boyfriend has a question for all of you experts on adult books out there (I'm not much help!). His sister-in-law's birthday is coming up soon, and he wanted to get her a bunch of mystery novels. She's a fan of Mary Higgins Clark. He was looking for the best books by MHC and other mystery authors.

Any suggestions?

Hrm. I've only read one book by Clark (I wasn't thrilled), so I'm no expert. I'd say she writes "suspense" mysteries, though I don't remember if there were many romance aspects.

I also don't read all that much suspense, so I'm guessing.

I'd tentatively suggest non-Peabody Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Michaels, Iris Johansen (I've only read one of these, too), Catherine Coulter (hate her, but I didn't like Clark, either), or maybe Tami Hoag.

Older authors, possibly MM Kaye (I keep plugging her!), or Charlotte Armstrong.
