Popular Fiction Featuring "Unlikely" Lead Characters | | I picked up a book the other day, with some trepidation after reading the back blurb, and took it home to read it with fingers crossed.
I Loved It.
Why the trepidation?
The main character in this romantic mystery (a genre I usually try to avoid) had a brain injury and suffers from Aphasia.
I have had bad experiences with handicapped, learning disabled, injured, etc. main characters where the authors just make them too sappy, or too "off" seeming (and therefore off putting).
This author did a very nice job creating an understanding of what Aphasia entails, showcaseing a very sympathetic and heroic lead character, without any condescending feeling.
The book: My Sunshine
The author: Catherine Anderson
Paperback, in Walmarts and grocery stores everywhere right now
Have any of you ever read a book that could have had a disaster in its attempt to make something hard understandable to the general public, yet overcame the challenge and made it work? What was it? |
