Movie director is stealing from Superman for Spiderman

Reginald Hudlin (director of the House Party movies and The Great White Hype, among others) has started writing the comic book Spiderman and he's stealing brazenly from the Superman mythology, especially in issue #15, dated August 2005. He's introduced a new character who:

is invulnerable and can fly;

works as a reporter at a big city newspaper in his civilian identity, which he protects by wearing glasses;

was raised on an farm in the Midwest U.S. by people who found him in a crashed rocket ship when he was an infant.

The theft is so obvious that Hudlin must be setting the stage for a dramatic shift to something else. If his creativity matches his audacity, it's going to be good.

I haven't paid attention to the Spiderman books (there are more than six new ones every month) for years, but I'm going to now. If you have any interest in either Spiderman or Superman, you might want to take a look as well.

Thanks, Peter. I'll pass this along to my comic-reading husband.

(and you know I just wanted to screw with the thread )

Which Spider-Man title is it? I haven't read them in a long time, but this sounds interesting.

My original Comic Book hobby started with Spider-Man.

"It's just Spider-Man" I told my then-girlfriend...

Re Movie director is stealing from Superman for Spiderman

It's called simply "Spider-Man" (or is it "Spiderman"?) except that above the title in smaller type is the phrase "Marvel Knights." It's only issue #15 so it must be a new title because the original series was numbered in the 100s or 200s when I was in junior high.

I can't send you my copy because I read someone else's. Maybe you could get your ex-girlfriend to get you one?

Marvel's also doing Spiderman and the Fantastic Four for the 10-and-under crowd. They don't show the picture online, but the one I saw in the print magazine made Peter Parker look like Harry Potter.

I'm sure I can find it at the local Newbury Comics. It will make a nice afternoon break, if I can ever get my weekly software build done.

Please. Beanie just saw The Thing at Target and wanted to buy "The man made out of peanuts."

I think G may cry.

No, it is Spider-Man, as JP already knew. I appreciate his breaking through the web of my confusion.

That makes sense. I saw a stuffed Thing recently (marketing for the movie that comes out soon, probably) and it looked like it was covered with peanuts more than rocks.

In a great Fantastic Four story, the villain learns that The Thing's heritage is Hebrew and says, "That's funny. You don't look Jewish."*

_____

* The joke probably doesn't work if you don't know that The Thing is covered with orange skin made of rocks.

Re Movie director is stealing from Superman for Spiderman

I forgot there was a title named "Spider-Man" and I was confused for a second, thinking about the original title "The Amazing Spider-Man."

I htink Maggie may have gotten me an issue of "Spider-Man" for Christmas, but back when I was collecting there was just "Amazind" and "The Spectacular Spider-Man" and... um, maybe one other I can't remember.

Boy, getting old is hard. ;-)
