| | Re American Idol Season 5... | | Agree about Randy, who apparently hasn't worked with Live or would have taken credit for the arrangements.
Still think Bucky should have been booted. I don't understand why he's there. There are 4 or 5 places in the neighborhood that have live music. On any given night, 3 of the people performing there are better singers and stylists.
One prop I have to give Chris (and to Simon for pointing it out) is that he remains the one contestant who won't compromise. I like that a lot. Chris' album is going to be damn good, but couldnt' they have combined two shows and let him be the lead singer of INXS? |

| | Re Idol Chris Walks the Line - the video | | I finally saw it last night (my hubby had Tivo'ed it.)
Big whoop.
He changed the major key to a minor key.
Instead of having a straight strum 4/4 time, he went 1-2-3 and a-4.
He had a dramatic ending.
Big whoop.
And my hubby said there's some controversy now because Chris' interpretation was very similar to something a rock group did a number of years ago.
But he isn't my least favorite. Taylor! Yuck! Yuck!
He's like "Leisure Suit Larry."
How did he ever get to the top 24? |

So - if Chris' version is like another groups - so what?
Most of the singers on the show are singing in somebody's style. |

| | Re Idol Chris Walks the Line - the video | | Well, differences of opinion are what make this a real horse race, wormie
My favorites, in approximate order:
Katherine McPhee
Mandisa
Lisa
Paris
I'm not that impressed with any of the others. Chris is probably the strongest male singer, but I don't think he can hold a candle to any of the ladies on my favorites list.
I am astonished that Lisa has been in the bottom three for a few weeks. She's just adorable, and a great singer. |

| | Re Idol Chris Walks the Line - the video | | If everyone agreed - there would be no show. And of course there is that whole group that works hard to call in for the worst singer!
I think Mandisa is the best and Chris is second. |

| | Re Idol Chris Walks the Line - the video | | It's not about being the best singer, it's about being the most entertaining. I think that is where Chris often shines. I think that's why Taylor is there. (Hey, Rod Stewart is not exactly Tony Bennett, but he is a stylist).
I do like the ladies -- I think the four mentioned recenty are very, very strong. I would like Paris to go away soon though regardless of her talent.
Bucky this week for sure. |

I'd like to see Chris and Mandisa in the finals and I'd be happy with either to win.
But I still love Taylor. |

| | Re Idol Chris Walks the Line - the video | | I'd like to smack the spoiled brat Lisa upside the head most days. Don't care if she can sing. Don't like her. Felt pretty much the same way about basketball girl Aila. Some kids are just given too much too soon. A little failure is good for the soul.

| | Re Idol Chris Walks the Line - the video | | What they said. It doesn't have to be the best voice. Paris definitely has one of the best voices, if not the best, but she's SO over-trained that she comes off as having no soul. And she totally picks the wrong songs.
Lisa is only good when she belts the crap out of something like Whitney. She can't pull off anything "fun" which is sort of creepy considering she's 16. |

| | Re Idol Chris Walks the Line - the video | | When all is said and done, if the American Idol is a recording success, you'll be listening to their music, not watching them perform.
Harry Nilsen ("Midnight Cowboy") never performed live at all.
And when you're listening, what you're left with is the voice. Does it give you goosebumps? Can you lose yourself in it?
Stage presence and presentation is certainly important, but only if it is combined with an excellent voice. |

Actually, now it's NOT as important that they can sing because they have electronic gadgets to make things sound good. I'm not saying that I like this turn of events, but its true. |

| | Re Idol Chris Walks the Line - the video | | I think we're talking about Everybody's Talkin' , which is a Hary Nilsson cover of a song by a folkie named Fred Neill. Neill had other songs covered by The Jefferson Airplane and Roy Orbison.
You're absolutely right, Fraz. Except for television, Nilsson didn't peform in public. After that song, though, he only had 2 other hits.
I don't think I would hold him up as someone to whom the American Idol kids will relate to. He died in 1994, or when Kevin, Lisa and Paris were 4 or 5. His last big hit was 6 years before Mandissa and Taylor were even born.
I believe Wormie is right. Stuido-only artists won't make it in today's world. I'm trying to think of someone in the last 10 or 15 years who wouldn't perform in public and remained successful and I can't.
With respect, American Idol is not about recording success. Ask Ruben or Fantasia. It's about who can sell a release (see Clarkson or Underwood). Even Bo Bice, who is extremely one dimensional, did well. It's about that likability, X factor, star power, whatever, that the judges keep going on about.
Look at it another way. Pick a singer similar to Nilsson like Harry Chapin. Now, God love Harry Chapin because he was a great man, but he was lucky to be in tune half the time, his voice cracked even on recordings and he would manage to veer out of tune on 6 note melodies. But he had passion and fire and a message and sold millions of records. That's the difference, I think. |

| | Re Idol Chris Walks the Line - the video | | frazz, that hasn't been true in ages. There isn't a market anymore for artists who sound good and aren't so hot. It's about videos, product tie-ins, and concerts. Everyone has to be pretty, and as long as you are pretty and can dance, in most cases, they don't care if you can sing at all because they'll produce the hell out of you.
Look at Ashlee Simpson. Sells millions of albums, and I can sing better on a bad day with laryngitis when she can. But she's blonde and has a decent body and a famous sister, so she has a career. Welcome to the 21st century.
