Re I hate Stephen King

Well, sis, it is about time you finally got around to reading this! lol I can understand your feelings about not wanting it to end, but the best thing about King is that you can read it over and over and not get bored!

As for this ending, I think you put it just right. It is not the ending you wanted, but the only ending that would have really worked. It was "right".

I have yet to get "Cell" since I am trying to save my pennies for upcoming events (read baby), but hope someone will lend it to me soon!

Now, someone tell me about book 8???? I think I had better go check out his website. It has apparently been too long since I have been there!

Funny, I just dug Odd Thomas out from under my bed a few days ago and finished it this afternoon (2nd reading). Didn't realize that there was another OT book. Now I have 2 books I need to borrow from someone!

I should just leave this sitting here and not answer it for a week or two.

Helllllooooooo, are you new to this forum?

We don't ask, we don't tell. Dassa de rules.

Back to our Stephen King discussion. If Steve drops in here, we need to show him we can have an intelligent discussion without derailing the conversation.

Eris, how's Cell coming?

It wasn't bad. Definately a "Stand" feel to it. He briefly appeared to be thinking of going somewhere with the whole concept, but then apparently got bored and finished the book off with a bang and a "lady or tiger" situation. Not the worst, not the best, and it was mostly entertaining.

I started Cell last night.

I am throwing away my cell phone, my husband's cell phone, and all those dead ones laying in drawers somewhere (you never know....)

Re I hate Stephen King

I read a review of the book the other day. It does sound like a creepy premise.

I guess that's what makes a lot of King's stuff so creepy - forget dinosaurs pulled from ancient mosquito blood or nanotechnology run amok, the idea that everyday things might turn on us can be very frightening!

Re I hate Stephen King

It's very creepy and gory. Throw back to the old SK days...the "good" old days.

And I'm not even to page 100 yet.

Re I hate Stephen King

I like it so far (Clay and the group have just reuinted but they are not to Kashwak yet). But it is incredibly "Stand"ish. And that's a little disappointing...unless he pulls a typical SK trick and makes it NOT like The Stand. Side note that I love The Stand, it's probably my favorite book of all time, but reusing the concepts is cheating.

And yes, Wormie (if you are reading) he's managed to off a couple of major characters already.

So eris, what did you think of the ending? I liked it...although I think it was too open, too many questions unanswered. Almost like he was leaving it open enough for a sequel.

I cracked up at the Charlie the Choo-Choo reference though. Seriously, got me laughing out loud.

Yeah, that's what made Ray Bradbury riveting. The ordinary things (and people) that suddenly did a weird paradigm shift.

I read all the Gunslinger books until #1 moved out and I couldn't read his anymore. Never would have even looked at them if he hadn't had them laying around the house. I never realized that there were so many more. Guess I'll have to hunt one up. The last one I read, the Gunslinger had managed to outwit the train. That's how long ago that was.

I'm not sure if he's setting up for a sequel, or if he just forgot he was writing a novel and it got shipped of accidentally. It wasn't the worst of his books, it was entertaining, but I was annoyed that all the interesting points he brought up got buried or forgotten along the way. A whole of potential story-telling gold hidden in the book, and it just gets ignored.

Hmm... maybe I would like it better if it was bigger. Maybe it's like a prequel of something huge. Of course, having written The Stand, and finished The Dark Tower, maybe King's just too tired to do a huge story anymore.

Re I hate Stephen King

Okay, Lynn, you knew it would happen. So did my husband. You lent me the book 25 hours ago and I am done. Kind of sad, since I didn't actually start it until this morning. I was so tired when I got home last night from the wedding that I felt it wouldn't be fair to myself to start reading.

I totally agree with everything you said, eris. There was a ton of potential and I think he dropped the ball a bit. I did enjoy the story- it was a great premise. It was just too open ended and left quite a bit out.

Lynn, your point last night about it being too flat was also very accurate. I missed his multiple stories within a story. I think that if he had gone into the back stories of other characters, like the folks they ended up meeting down the line, it would have mirrored The Stand far too much however...

Thanks for lending me the book! If I get a chance to get down to Mom and Dad's before you get back, I will bring it so you can have it back!

Leslie
