Sally Jenkins on the Snowboarding Showoff Who Finished Second

I become more convinced every day that Michael Wilbon is not Tom Boswell's successor as best sport columnist at the Washington Post. Sally Jenkins is.

Her hilarious column on Lindsey Jacobellis is a must read. If you didn't know Lindsey (and my wife pointed her out to me, so thanks), she is the woman who apparently was leading in a race for a brand new sport called Snowboard Cross.

Anyway, Lindsey apparently is so far ahead, she should apparently get the gold and silver medals. Then she hot-dogged on the next-to-last jump, did that half-pipe, grabbing the board in the air thingy and....fell.

By the time she dusted herself off and made for the finish line, she finished with silver. Dumb mistake by an overconfident athlete, but do read her column for some chuckles.

For a neat juxtaposition, read Wilbon on Gilbert Arenas finally making the All-Star team as a medical replacement and how he constantly reminds himself that he was not a first-rounder (despite being projected there) and so forth. Nice stuff, but a great contrast:

Sally Jenkins:
Biff, Crash, Bang - http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...021701471.html

Michael Wilbon:
Insecurity Drives Arenas -

Your old music cannot sustain you through a life, not if you're someone who listens to music every day, at every opportunity. You need input, because pop music is about freshness, about Nelly Furtado and the maddeningly memorable fourth track on a first album by a band you saw on a late-night TV show. And no, that fourth track is not as good as anything on Pet Sounds or Blonde on Blonde or What's Going On, but when was the last time you played Pet Sounds? - Songbook by Nick Hornby

I think this snowboard cross is my new favorite Olympic sport! So much fun to watch. Now off to read the article.

My initial reaction is that it's an idiotic thing to do, and I am annoyed by people dancing in end-zones and the like, and the lack of respect it shows for the other participants.

On the other hand... a lot of sports are judged by tricks you do. That this sport hasn't really figured it self out is no surprise. It appears to still be evolving, and it has some baggage left over from being "X-treme!"

In the final analysis, though, making a big mistake while showing off to the crowd is nearly always going to look stupid.

The paper ran a sidebar showin all the boneheaded hotdogging moments like that, led, of course, by Leon Lett.

What continues to floor me is not that this woman lost her gold medal and settled for silver. It was that her shame was in falling on the trick, which is something the x-treme crowd doesn't do. She hung her head in shame for that. Great -- thanks for representing our country so well. Glad it wasn't all about you.

Someone find me a Wheaties box for this chick. Actually Cocoa Puffs might be more appropriate.

As disgusted with her as I was, Shani Davis beat her out for most obnoxious American athlete last night in his non-interview with NBC.

I'll be the one rooting for him to fall on his butt in his next race.
