| | Re member, remember, the seventeenth of March... | | No, no... See, V, the main character in V for Vendetta, dresses up as Guy Fawkes. The movie was even actually supposed to be released on November 4th, which was the closest they could get to Guy Fawkes day (which is the 5th of November). Due to wanting to mess with my head, they pushed it back to opening on March 17th. See, it all makes sense.

| | Re member, remember, the seventeenth of March... | | Because a) it's being done by the Wachowski brothers (Matrix) and b) it's based on a TRULY kickass graphic novel about revolution in the face of fascism and c) the TRULY kickass graphic novel it was based on was written by Alan Moore, who is a GOD, and d) it's got Hugo Weaving in it.

| | Re member, remember, the seventeenth of March... | | Finally saw this movie tonight. As I was telling Pippa, I loved it. Loved it.
This is an awesome movie, which I will be purchasing. I can absolutely see why it didnt do well in theaters
a) plot line too close to the way reality is headed
b) extraordinarily literary with LOTS of references to books and historical figures
c) intense use of vocabulary (I literally think half of current America probably couldn't understand the first ten minutes, which were all in English)
d) psychology of terrorism and control through fear, use of religion and politics to control the public, waging war against your own citizens for power
It was nice to excercise the brain in an action movie. Even the minimal gore was artistic and I totally dug the film noir feel. |

| | Re member, remember, the seventeenth of March... | | V was a lot more morally ambiguous in the graphic novel, and the totalitarian government was less caricatured. This blunted the film for me.
Of course, people don't want to see an anarchistic terrorist fighing a questionable fight on the big screen. In the film, it's pretty clear that V is the "good guy" even though some of his methods are quesitonable. And things are looking up in the end.
In the end of the graphic novel, there is a violent uprising in the wake of his actions, and it's not at all clear that things are really any better off.
If you liked the movie, you might want to check out the graphic novel.
Still, I thought the film was decent. But it was definitely trying to send a message about current events, and it was clear who the filmmakers were siding with. | | |
