| | Ok. I just discovered podcasts, to go with my dinky little ipod shuffle. Are any of you into podcasts? If so, which ones do you like?
Thus far, I've only tried 2 guys, 1 brain.

| | Penn Jillette has a podcast, which is good if you like him.
Odeo is one decent place to look for podcasts: http://www.odeo.com/
And you can find popular ones in iTunes. You probably know about iTunes, though.
The NPR podcasts are cool. The daily story. I love the "game show" called "Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me." Also "Science Friday."
TheOnion has a podcast, but I haven't listened to it yet.

| | Do you have to have an IPOD to view podcasts or can you watch them on your computer screen?

| | Deb, you can listen to them on your computer. They are typically audio programs, not video. Some of them are quite good.

| | Reason I'm asking is because teaching statistics online is so frustrating. A concept that would take me 5 minutes to explain, using a white board with colored markers, takes forever to write out in lecture format. If I could put together a series of video lectures that could be easily viewed in different formats, my students would really benefit. Just audio wouldn't really do it - the diagram needs to be there.

| | Yep. JP is right. I just saw video podcasts for the first time.
Deb, there are several articles online about colleges using ipods for instruction. It's a pretty cool use of technology.

| | You may have heard of Audible.com which allows you to download audio books. But I didn't know until recently that my extended library network participates in a digital book loan program.
Through this program you can "borrow" digital media. Depending on the media, I can play the files through some special computer software, or through an MP3 player. Because of rights restrictions, you may have to put a book on hold. After a certain amount of time, the "on hold" digital book is automatically returned to the library (i.e. the software will stop allowing you to play it.)
Some media may be unrestricted, however.
In any case, if your local library is part of a larger network, you might check its website and see if you can download digital books to your iPod. I currently have "Blink" on hold and am downloading "Desolation Island" by family-favorite Patrick O'Brian.

| | Oh, beautiful.
The library delivers the files in .wma file format. Which means I can play them in Windows Media Player, but not on my iPod.
If i want them on my iPod, I have to write them to CD and then rip them off again. However, the DRM-protected .wma files do not allow you burn them to a CD, so the workaround doesn't work for those. I've played the butn-to-CD-and-then-rip-to-MP3 game before with books. It's not worth the trouble anyway. Real PITA.

| | Thanks to JP, I found a great podcast that I love. It's put out by NPR and is called Not My Job. It has me laughing out loud, and it's fun trivia. Oh, MJ, your Queen quiz TOTALLY paid off for me on one episode. They used some of the same material for their quiz.
I also am into a photoshop video podcast that is put out once a week by the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. It's a great weekly tutorial.

I love how we can share lists of podcasts, and next thing I know you've come back with 2 great podcasts I didn't know about. I'm subscribing to them now.

| | Ah - "Not My Job" is from the great quiz show "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me." It's the type of show that most people here on EA would probably enjoy - a quiz show based on the news events of the previous week. But mostly it's an opportunity for the people involved to goof around and riff on the headlines.
But "Not My Job" is one of the funniest parts of it. Since I don't catch it on the radio often, I subscribe.
That photoshop podcast looks really useful. Fun and useful? Even better. |

| | We listen to Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me all the time. It's usually on when we are shuttling kids on Saturdays.
Also big fans of Car Talk... you don't have to be a car nut to listen to them, because they are hilarious. |

| | "Wait, wait, don't tell me" is awesome. And it's scary to admit how many times I know the answers because I read the stories here. The Dumb Floridians stories pop up every once in a while too, in the game where you listen to three stupid news stories and have to decide which one isn't made up

| | I've heard that one on NPR just once - we don't travel too many places on Saturday long enough to bother with the radio. I loved it. And like MJ, it was *freaky* how much of the stories I knew from reading them here!

| | I am adding a new one that I think y'all will like. NPR has one called Sunday Puzzle. Every week, there is a puzzle. If you submit the correct answer, they could call you and ask you to play their word game. If you win the game, you get a bunch of games and puzzle books and such.

| | I don't have an ipod (I'm usually about 20 years behind on any and all new technology), but I love to listen to Wait Wait Don't Tell Me on the radio.
Amy, Sunday Puzzle is (I think) the Will Shortz segment on All Things Considered. Anyone who is into that who is also into the NYT crossword puzzle would probably like the movie Wordplay -- it's mostly about the crossword, but has some scenes of Will in the NPR studio doing the radio show. Jon Stewart makes a brief appearance in the movie (very funny!) and Bill Clinton (sigh) and Bob Dole. The DVD of the movie is great -- it has all sorts of extras. |

And Auntie, you don't need an iPod to listen to podcasts. Just a computer with speakers.
