Metromix. `Ugly Betty' captures the beauty of its premise

Is anybody going to watch it tonight? I hesitantly have it set up to record on the Tivo.

Re Ugly Betty

It looks like it could be funny, but I don't think we'll be home. I'll be lucky if we can get back in time to watch Grey's. I hate that it's on Thursday's now.

Re Ugly Betty

Grey's has been repeating on Fridays at 7:00, Bree.

I probably won't catch Betty, although it is supposed to be good. I have to admit I was sort of offended by the concept when it first was talked about, but I've read enough to believe they are not being cruel.

Besides, I have enough timewaster TV shows to watch these days.

Not my kind of show, but it sounds good. I hear raves about the original series this is based on.

Re Ugly Betty

The original movie was funny, BUT one thing irked me. The ugly duckling in the movie got a sense of style and became a looker. Sort of like Rocky's wife becoming pretty when she took off her glasses. I don't think Ugly Betty is ever going to become a swan. At least I hope not. We can't all make that transition

Re Ugly Betty

It was on last night, I kind of watched bits and pieces and it was alright. It had it's funny moments, but wasn't as funny as I thought it was going to be. But then again, maybe I just happened to be out of the room for all the funny parts.

And we got to watch Grey's too. And it's a good thing Nick got home, since apparently I didn't sent up the VCR correctly. Or something. I don't know exactly what happened yet, but it never kicked on. No biggie though, since we were there to watch it. I've just got to get it sorted out before I start trying to tape something else.

Re Ugly Betty

I got to see all but the first few minutes. (Well, I saw the first couple, then missed the next few.)

What was the deal with the woman who was supposedly dead, but was apparently alive and in cahoots with Vanessa Williams at the end?

Re Ugly Betty

I didn't understand that part at all, but then again, I didn't know she was supposedly dead either. I missed the first 20-30 minutes.

Re Ugly Betty

You can watch it online on NBC's website. I caught the beginning, and it looked like it might be intriguing. Too many shows are on Thursday.

Re Ugly Betty

I saw it, and I thought it was good. I didn't think she was really "ugly," though, so I had to deliberately suspend disbelief on that part of the premise. Also, I wished she had accepted credit, at the end, for her idea, rather than be the self-sacrificing underling. Otherwise, I enjoyed it. Not sure where they can go with it from here, as all the major plot points seem to already have been resolved by the end of the episode, but I'm going to watch at least one more episode to see.

Re Ugly Betty

I didn't watch it and I doubt that I would.
I've seen commercials. The girl isn't ugly - the just make her look and dress a bit nerdy. I shouldn't comment without watching it, but I hate the ideas of shows that tell people they look ugly or not pretty enough.

Re Ugly Betty

I haven't seen it but I echo what wormie says. I also feel sorry for everyone named Elizabeth and hope that they arent' already being called "Ugly Betty" thanks to the boobtube. Plus, I worry what message this show is sending to young girls. IDK, I haven't seen it but I just don't like it's concept... or the concept I presume it has.

Edit to add I just tried looking at the ABC premier synopsis that doesn't tell me much other than she's "slightly plump". WTF... the girl I think is Ugly Betty... the one wearing the Guadalajara poncho... is freaking skinny! GAH I hate this show more already!

Re Ugly Betty

"Freaking skinny" is a bit of a stretch, but she is probably thinner than most people that I see at the mall.

And if they wanted "ugly" they got the wrong actress. But I think the title is possibly meant to be at least somewhat ironic. Maybe I'm wrong.

Re Ugly Betty

Hmm... I mean "freaking" in place of another F word. Not that she's freakishly thin. I'm angry that they're calling her "plump."

Re Ugly Betty

Yeah. Well, that's probably relative. And though beauty is in the eye of the beholder, this girl is cute even in her "ugly Betty" getup and without the extras she looks as attractive as a lot of other people you'd be used to seeing on TV.

Re Ugly Betty

I am surprised at the comments - we just watched this on TiVo and thought it was really great. No, she's not super duper ugly or anything, but she is not waifish, she wears glasses and ugly clothes and has braces and she's short. This is in a world of models relating to a fashion magazine - hence the ironic "ugly".

This is based on a telenovella - that's why it's over the top, like the woman in bandages at the end.
