| | Re American Idol Season 6 | | Well, I sat down and watched the whole thing without reading or working on the computer at the same time (something I haven't done yet this season).
I thought Melinda was AMAZING -- I thought that was a real "Star is Born" moment. I'm just hoping that (1) she doesn't peak and start going downhill, and (2) that her gee-whiz attitude is genuine. I think it is, or at least it was, but now I'm not sure -- I think maybe she may be starting to milk it a little? I hope not. In any case, I think she needs to cut it back now, to accept that she IS now a superstar, beloved by millions.
I thought LaKisha was good. She has a great voice. But I didn't really like what she did with that song. I would have liked to hear a more aching, bittersweet quality.
I thought the rest of them were boring. I can't believe that out of the 100,000 people who auditioned, these were the 12 best. It seems like there is something very contrived about the way they pick the semi-finalists.
I agreed with almost everything Simon said (and I usually don't agree with him much). Except that I disagreed with what he said about Jordin. I thought she was good, but nowhere near being in the Melinda-LaKisha league. I think they are just trying to make it seem like this is a 3-way race, that there are at least 3 people who are in the running -- otherwise, what's the point of the next ten weeks?
As far as people gaming the show, there's also Vote for the Worst. They're telling people to vote for Sanjaya this week. I've heard that they have been able to sway results in the past.
Anyway, I really hope Melinda makes it, and doesn't get chewed up by the Idol machinery. Maybe it would be better for her if she didn't win, and got to go on her own path (?)
I think she is the best contestant they have ever had, and that includes Jennifer Hudson. |

| | Re American Idol Season 6 | | With regards to the selection of contestants, I think we must understand that the selection process is as much a casting call anything. Contestants are selected for the drama they will create in addition to their talent. I honestly think they need a dud or too in the lineup to get people voting early. Make the early votes easy ones and then people will have time to get to know and like the more talented kids later in the season.

| | Re American Idol Season 6 | | I have a question, I was thinking about this last night. I think that Melinda and Lakisha are absolutely incredible artists. After Lakisha's performance last night, I would have gone and ordered a CD on the spot if she had one available. In years past, were the eventual winners as amazing as Melinda and Lakisha are already? What I mean is, if those two werne't in this competition, would the rest of the contestants sound better to us, or are they really that boring? I think that of the rest, I like Chris Sligh, Jordan and ....dang...the guy who sang 'Virtual Insanity' - anyway, I like those guys, but they just aren't even in the same league as L. and M.
Does any of that make sense? |

| | Re American Idol Season 6 | | Yeah, it makes sense. And maybe if Melinda and LaKisha weren't there, the others wouldn't sound so bad, or at least some of them wouldn't. As far as past years with amazing singers, there was the year with Jennifer Hudson, Fantasia, and Latoya. IIRC, they were all good right from the start. |

| | Re American Idol Season 6 | | I think that Melinda had lots of opportunity to observe superstars and divas as a successful backup singer. It also says on her bio that she has a degree in vocal performance and has worked with a vocal coach twice a week ever since.
I like that in Melinda. Not only does she possess natural talent, but she has nurtured it and honed it and taken care of it. I think that her ability to observe helped her to know what to do when she had her chance (and she's doing it magnificently.)
Lakesha, too, studied classical voice and opera at college. She did not complete her degree, quite possibly because she became pregnant with her daughter and needed to become self-supporting. Her instincts astonish me--she has a good read on the music emotionally, and picks songs that suit her. I really kind of adore Lakesha. I have a dear, dear friend who grew up in Flint, Michigan who has that same beautiful smile. She lives in California now (her birthday is Tuesday) and whenever I see Lakesha I am reminded of her.
I think that Diana Ross was a difficult choice for the men. She's not a belter--her songs don't really suit men's voices. |

| | Re American Idol Season 6 | | I was snockered last night when I watched it. I swear this bartender made a margarita that was a glass of tequila with a splash of lime. I felt like I drank a bottle of Nyquil.

| | Re American Idol Season 6 | | Diana Ross was terrible! I wish I hadn't seen that. I grew up in the 60s, and loooooooved the Supremes when I was a kid. Hearing her lurch off-key last night was like having a precious childhood memory destroyed -- like finding out Santa Claus was a thief. I want a brain wipe! |

| | Re American Idol Season 6 | | I know. And you'd think I would have learned after seeing Aretha on tv a couple of years ago - and turning off the set practically in tears. I was shocked that she's actually going to do a tour. |

| | Re American Idol Season 6 | | Jordin Sparks. O.M.G.
Blake was great.
Sanjaya was worse than ever. I was embarrassed for him. It was really nice of him to hug that crying girl. I would have cried too, though, if I'd had to sit through that.
And speaking of the crying girl, WTF?
At least I remembered to buy limes for this week's show. |

| | Re American Idol Season 6 | | I was wondering last night if Ray Davies would take a hit out on Sanjaya after that. And that girl.. was that some sort of Make a Wish trip or something? I didn't get it. |

| | Re American Idol Season 6 | | Jordin Sparks really wowed me last night. Paris, from last season, had a big voice, but she never seemed to 'get' the music she was singing. Jordin gets it.

| | Re American Idol Season 6 | | Again, they were doing music from my era -- I loooooved Herman's Hermits when I was a kid, and played their album over and over.
I didn't even know that Peter Noone was still alive! And he looked good too.
I thought they were all fine, except for the two Chrises. Maybe I liked the singing better this time just because I liked the music itself more than I usually do. I didn't even mind Sanjaya. I cringed when I heard he was going to be doing the Kinks -- I thought that it was going to be painful to listen to -- but his performance was actually kind of fun.
Jordin stepped into the big leagues, maybe even passing LaKisha, who was not all that exciting this time. I thought Blake was good, but I don't know why everyone was falling all over themselves to say he sounded so "modern" -- to me, the way he sang the song sounded very much like the original.
I would have liked to see Melinda try something outside of her comfort zone, but hey, she's a genius at what she does. She seems so much of a pro -- it's almost unfair to have her in an amateur competition.
Did you notice that the intro started off with the Beatles -- it looked as if this was going to be "Beatles night" -- and then the contestants sang everybody but? I guess they couldn't get the rights to the songs. |

| | Re American Idol Season 6 | | It's rigged. Either the producers are doing it on purpose to give us all a reason to keep watching, or else the call centre thing is true. In either case, Ford had ought to pull their adverts from the entire mess.
I used to agree with Amy, that he's a nice kid who can't sing. However, this is the third week in a row that a really talented performer had to leave so that the creepy Michael Jackson wannabee can stay. He is past appalling - he's dreadful, he ought to be embarrassed to listen to himself sing in the shower. He ought to remove himself from the show.
And just in case it is the call centres voting for him:
"Dear India,
Sanjaya sucks. We hate him. Every time he sings, God kills a cow.
Love,
Us" |

It must be working. Girly Boy must go. Brian has begun calling him "Mangina".
