Sweeney Todd?

Pippa, I can't find it now, but today I thought I read something about Johnny Depp being in a new film of Sweeney Todd. Please tell me this is true? That would be absolutely brilliant!

Re Sweeney Todd?

"Based on" the musical. Any indications whether they're actually singing? 'Cause I'm not sure I want to hear Johnny Depp sing. And I *know* I don't want to see Snape and Pettigrew sing!

Re Sweeney Todd?

This certainly falls into the good news/bad news dept. I love this show, but I hope that Johnny Depp has the chops to sing that role. I think it's really interesting musically, not something you could hum and talk thourhg. Sweeney Todd has to sing!

I still can't wait. It should be interesting. Now if only Angela Lansbury would stop being Mrs. Lovett in my head. Did anyone else see her in it?

Re Sweeney Todd?

I saw Angela and George Hearn on the tour in 1980. Great theater! I think Burton is absolutely the right director. I'm unsure on the casting but will reserve judgment. It's not going to be a simple stage to screen transfer, that's for sure so it will upset purists but those sort of film treatments rarely work. The piece has to be completely reimagined for the different medium (which is why the movie version of 'Chicago' was great and 'The Producers' was deadly...)
