I have watched one or two Nashville Star episodes, and in the final rounds the singers have to sing one of their own compositions.
Most of the Idol songs seem to have something to do with the quest for greatness (or celebrity, take your pick.)
It would be fairer (and the ultimate audition) for the finalists to sing a song of their own composition.
Kind of like A Chorus Line:
"I need this job,
Oh, God, I need this job."
I know that some might not have experience writing songs (after all, Jordin, who's been entering so many contests in the past few years she had to be homeschooled, is only 17.) But Idol has a staff, and each finalist could consult the staff for help with a lyric or a melody.
That would be a level playing field.
Atrocious as that song was, it was better suited to Jordin's style, and the playing field wasn't level at all. |
