Sesame Street - Not Suitable for Children

I think the nanny society has finally reached a nadir with this particular warning label.

MNM

NY Times Magazine - Sesame Street on DVD - Inappropriate for Children

Re Sesame Street - Not Suitable for Children

OMG, no WONDER I hate Red Ribbon Week at the kids' school. It isn't that the totalitarian "all drugs are equal; all drugs are bad" mantra has my daughter declaring me an alcoholic for drinking SIX beers in SIX months, it's that I watched Cookie Monster with a pipe in my formative years.

Thank GOD they haven't released Electric Company... Rita Moreno did a mean dirty dance with Morgan Freeman.

Re Sesame Street - Not Suitable for Children

I think Rita Moreno and Morgan Freeman smoked some devil weed before they did that dance.

I heard a story on NPR about this Sesame Street DVD and the warning. They talked about how "raw" Sesame Street was back then, and the sense that you were in the "mean streets" of the city. I was left kind of They also insinuated that perhaps Bert and Ernie had a "special" relationship, and that Oscar needed Prozac.

I think if anything, it shows how over-protective we've become as a society. Now we have to worry if Tinky Winky holds a purse. Puff the Magic Dragon and Alice and Wonderland would not be released in today's society.

I'm glad we think about the "lessons" we teach our children. I'm not so glad that the same programming I watched as a child would be considered so outrageous by today's standards. I think we've definately gone too far.

I knew there was a reason I didn't like SS as a kid - I could tell what a horrible influence it was!

Re Sesame Street - Not Suitable for Children

Sesame Street was friendly and cozy, with dollops of excitement and silliness. Brnnnng, brnnng! That's the phone ringing for the aliens (they must be aliens) who would deconstruct Sesame Street, Bowdlerize it thoroughly, and take all the fun out of another chunk of our lives. Jeez. Of COURSE only Big Bird could see Snuffleuagus. He was, oh, imaginary.
