Dan Fogelberg, 56, dies of cancer

Going to college in Illinois in the '70's most meant I listened to a lot REO Speedwagon, Styx and other "loud" midwestern artists. But, I also owned and pretty much wore out all Dan Fogelberg's albums.

I saw him in concert a few years back, and he was great! I listened to him a lot in high school. Very sad.

Re Dan Fogelberg, 56, dies of cancer

I hadn't thought about Dan Fogelberg in many years, but while I was putting up my Christmas tree last week, I played one of his CD's (a gift from the previous Christmas.)

He was young (two years younger than me.....)

Prostate cancer is a slow growing cancer, but obviously something that fifty-something men need to be checked for. Several of our current Presidential candidates have been treated for prostate cancer--Giuliani and Thompson.

Re Dan Fogelberg, 56, dies of cancer

While I'd classify much of his music as vanilla pudding, it was all very singable, and had great storytelling appeal. I sang "Longer" at more weddings than you can shake a stick at, and I've always liked "Same Old Lang Syne" a lot.

I think at one point I had every song on 'Netherlands' memorized. This is really sad.

Re Dan Fogelberg, 56, dies of cancer

He was singing in the Champaign, Illinois coffee houses when hubby was a freshman/sophomore in college. By the time I got there he was past the 'pass the hat' phase of his career but still came to the venues around campus to play. Even my mom who doesn't like anything but classical liked his "Illinois". I nearly wore out "Part of the Plan". I'll have to dig out my old vinyl Fogelberg album's and see if I can get the turntable working to listen to them. Of course the kids think that those huge vinyls are antiques.

Too young to go.

me too.
And Part of the Plan.
I still like a lot of his stuff. It might be "vanilla" but he was poetic. When we saw him in concert it was just him and a guitar, and it made me realize that he was even more talented than I had thought.

To mark his passing, elevators across America will observe a moment of silence tomorrow morning.

I laughed, but I'm already going to hell. And I'm guessing Delia might be playing some Fogelberg after she gets home from work for his penance.

Re Dan Fogelberg, 56, dies of cancer

Well, it's just that he was so young and his music wasn't that muzak-y for the time/situations he wrote it. I'd be more inclined to laugh heartily if it were an old guy. Or John Tesch.

Re Dan Fogelberg, 56, dies of cancer

It's sad he died. I didn't know who he was but I listened to him on youtube since I heard this (I listened to "Longer" and "Same Auld Lang Syne"). I'm sure I've heard both songs before, but they didn't make any impression on me. It sounds like stuff you get forced to listen to at the dentist's office. I can't say I disapprove of Brian's joke, but, maybe for those of you who have some fond association of this music, it is different.

56 is too young to die any way you slice it.

We may have overlapped some time in Champaign. I always liked "The River" from the first album.

I really loved his music, but I'm the first to admit that Longer was pure unadulterated schmaltz.

Margaret gets second place after Brian.

(BTW, Dan Fogelberg's Vanilla Pudding is by far better than Michael Bolton's Milk Toast, which I'm about to blast in the Clash of the Choirs thread even though "he's not dead yet")
