| | Has anyone seen it? I've read a couple of reviews and both say the movie is suitable for ages 13 and over. |

| | I thought it was amazing! There is quite a bit of bloodshed (at least I've been told--I always close my eyes during those scenes...)
No foul language.
No sex or nudity.
Although it is a tale of vengeance, there is never any doubt that vengeance only brings emptiness.
The acting, sets, and costumes are astonishing. The singing is, surprisingly, quite good (although I'm sure that the wonders of modern sound studio mixing played a big part in that.)
I think that it is Depp's best role.
As far as whether 13 year olds should see it, it probably depends on the 13 year old, and you know your 13 year old best.
I think that most 13 year olds could see "Sweeney." I would rather see them see violence in a movie as well done as "Sweeney" than in your average horror or action movie. |

| | Yeah... I think today's 13 year old could see it. It's a bit macabre. But it is very well done.
Deserving of any awards it should get.

| | Saw it tonight. I agree, it's totally brilliant.
However, Cindy, I wouldn't take your #'s 3 and 4 to see it. Especially #3. The storyline is one thing, but Burton did an amazing job at making it extremely dark.

| | Ok, and I guessed as much about #3. Now- would I like it? I loved it as a musical, but the movie might be way more graphic. |

| | Gobs of blood. From the opening credits til the end. Which kind of desensitizes you to it. And, in a theatre loaded with adults... I laughed. It was just so damned comical the amount of blood.
You know what I love most about this "musical"... there's not a helluva lot of joyful dancing. I love musicals with dancing... but not when they are macabre and the dancing makes no sense. The bit of dancing that is done is appropriate.
The kitchen... looks oddly familiar...

| | The ratings board more or less always rates a film R if there are body fluids flying during a violent encounter. That's why in PG-13 movies, things like decapitations are virtually bloodless. They're filmed that way deliberately to mollify the ratings folk. Take a look at the violence in something like 'The Lord of the Rings'. There's almost no blood.
Burton made the decision to make blood a major visual metaphor and the murders in 'Sweeney Todd' have copious amounts of red stuff flying. This necessitates the R in the minds of the MPAA. I wouldn't have any problem taking teens to it. They've seen a lot worse.
The film is brilliantly performed and filmed. It's not the stage show, so those who love the original piece might be offended at the changes and liberties taken by Burton but its a great, cohesive piece of work and will introudce new audiences to Sondheim's masterpiece. If you want the original, that production is available on DVD with George Hearn and Angela Lansbury and there's a concert version with George Hearn and Patti Lupone also on DVD.

| | I was going to see it in the theaters, but I think I'm going to wait for the DVD. I think that the blood will have less impact on the small screen and I'm a squeamish kind of girl. |

| | It will be a good rental, Pippa. It doesn't need to be on the big screen.

| | I just can't wait- I need to see Johnny Depp on the big screen ASAP!
And although #2 has seen worse, #3 probably won't see it. He eve asked to be left at home, which is unusual. So, I am going next week and can't wait.
Oh, and yay! for the tip, MNM! I didn't know the Angela Lansbury version was available. What a great performance- I loved it! |

| | The older versions are going on my Blockbuster rental list NOW. I'm still not sure whether I want to see the new one in the theater or on DVD. Probably in the theater, though. It's one of the few chances I'll ever have to drag my husband to a musical.

MNM | The stage show has undergone some transformations, too. We saw it on Broadway with Patti Lupone and Michael Cervaris, and it was a very unusual presentation. Everyone played a musical instrument onstage--Patti Lupone played a tuba, Sweeney's daughter played a cello. Lupone was dressed more like a cabaret waitress, complete with fishnet stockings, than a 19th century baker.
Very little scenery--when a murder occurred someone would come and throw a bucket of fake blood on the victim.
My daughter had loved the video of Angela Lansbury and George Hearn's "Sweeney Todd..." After looking forward to Sweeney so much, she found herself disappointed.
I had never seen the Lansbury/Hearn video, but liked Burton's "Sweeney" much better than the latest Broadway incarnation. |

| | I just watched it and I was never convinced that the blood looked anything like blood, so it might not bother you Pip.
I was very distracted by the Burton-isms in this movie. I generally like Burton, but when I'm missing dialogue because I'm comparing the costume, the makeup, the staging, etc to other Burton movies, I'd say it's getting in the way of the story for me.
Now, the big question -- Did anyone else think that Depp's face looked like Glenn Danzig in this movie? I kept being overwhelmed by the fact that he looked like Danzig. There's Glenn young. There's Glenn... mature.
