| | | I have a chip-based Diamond Rio with 128mb of space that takes 5 to 10 minutes to transfer two hours of material over USB, or even longer if I .WMA compress it if it's voice or an audio book. I didn't get a walkman or a mini-CD player since I tend to make things skip when I hike or walk.
No, I do not skip while I walk. Skipping is only for candy stores and brothels. "Goody goody, what treats are in store of wacky little me, tonight?"
Feh.
Apple just announced a mini-HD (IBM?) based 5gb player that can hold 1,000 songs, transfer by firewire 30 times as fast as USB, and is about the same size for $100 more than I paid for the Rio, the warranty, and a CD or two that turned out to suck royally I bought while getting it. http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/2001...ipod_dc_3.html
Why is it that when I buy something that's cutting-edge, like my car, my phone, and my music player, some other manufacturer finally sees the light and makes it 30 times better right then and there? Sure, I got what I needed, but in just 6 months somebody kicks its ass with features and stuff and stability that I could actually use.
Grumble. Mongo want iPod. Someone want a used Rio? |

| | CamWorld had this to say about the iPod: “The Apple iPod looks pretty cool. While it's designed specifically for storing and playing MP3s, I wonder how long it will be before someone is able to create alternative applications for it. Like a GPS mapping program, or a restaurant locator (with menus!). Could the iPod be Apple's first step back into the world of PDAs? Think about it, a PDA with a 5 GB hard drive and firewire port. Wow.” |

| | A lot of people were expecting the iPod to be a PDA and are quite disappointed that it isn't.
File, I didn't know you had a Mac - iPod requires iTunes2 (at least for now)

| | I seriously think this is stupid. Sure, it's portable, but damn! Do you really want to spend that much on a MP3 player? You can go buy a MP3 player and a much larger hard drive for your computer for less money. I think it's just ridiculous...
But, then again, I think Macs are ridiculous too

| | Yeah, I know...no reasoning with me. Sure Mac makes good products for graphics and video editing, but they also made the glorified kleenex box and the iMac in every color imaginable (boy did I see a million of those suckers come in for various problems when I used to work tech support at Michigan State University).

| | If $399 for the iPod is a bit too steep a price for you to pay, the $38.26 iPod LC might be just what you need. |

| | Oh well, it's a moot point around this house, since my husband told me he has already ordered the darn thing. He says if nothing else it is another hard drive.
This is a man who signed on yesterday to find out that his new Powerbook would not be shipping for 10 days. Then he found out that the Apple store in Glendale had the Powerbooks he and his co-worker were looking for. Turns out, no, they didn't, because the ones they wanted had bigger hard drives and more RAM. The co-worker knew of a place where they could get the bigger hard drive, so they went there first. Then they drove up to LA to get the Powerbooks only to find out that the Apple store was out of the RAM upgrade. They got the machines anyway and got RAM at a cheaper place somewhere else.
Then my husband came back to the office to cancel his pending order with the online Apple store. He got a message that he had to call back during business hours. You would think he would have done this before he left for LA, but no, he had to have the new one in hand first.
Then he came home last night, checked his e-mail to find out that the computer he ordered online shipped today! AAGGHHH!!! He does this sort of thing all the time!
The upshot of all this is now I am back to using a Mac portable (his old one, not even a year old yet) which means I can run all the software that I haven't been able to use for the past month. Yep, and I have 512 MB of RAM which is just what I need for surfing the web, don't you think? Oh yeah, baby!

| | Thanks for the link, Erik. I checked out the rest of the dissimilation site and saw his review where he compares his iBook to a Mead-grad wire bound.

| | It's funny to think that ipod was just this mythical thing... not something that everyone and their grandmother owns like it is today. Funny. I can remember when I got mine, how everyone wanted to see it, and see how it worked. I had forgotten how novel it once was. |
