Duma Key

Any one else reading it?

HINT.

It's very good.

It's very Stephen.

It's very Rose Madder-ish.

I'm nearly done...so no spoilers quite yet.

Re Duma Key

I got it from hubby for Valentine's Day. I am only a few chapters in (where he first tries to explore the area with his daughter), so I can't really say what I think yet.

Re Duma Key

Yeah, your hubby told me last night he'd gotten it for you.

I got it at the library - everyone was making fun of me because I got the LARGE PRINT edition, but when I put it on reserve I told them I didn't care which version I got, as long as I got it quickly.

I got it from audible, but haven't started listening to it yet. I've been working my way though some podcasts before I allow myself to start another book.

Re Duma Key

Picked it up from the library this morning. Just finished Blaze, which, for a (no, this is really the last one!) Bachman trunk novel, was really, really good.

Really.

I was looking at it on Amazon yesterday and decided against it...I don't like most of the Bachman stuff, but on your recommendation, maybe I'll get it.

(missed you, BTW...glad to see you back! )

Duma Key is making me look sideways at Cindy and wonder what strange new gifts she might be developing.

Re Duma Key

I saw this in the grocery store and went hummmm I did like cell for the most part-sometimes I REALLY like King-sometimes-not so much...

I'll put it on hold at the library when I've returned the umpteen million things I checked out. My commute-I read about a book and 1/2 a day. so I go thru them quickly.

Re Duma Key

I really liked it too, Les. I finished it up, and it seemed complete. Had the requisite "You're not quite done" King ending.

It's probably (outside The Dark Tower) my favorite since Insomnia, which is #2 on my King list.

There's a rather amusing review of Lisey's Story on Amazon that summed up my feelings about that book....I think it could have been a good story, but the smucking language and cutsey writing style got in the way. Duma didn't suffer that fate, thankfully, and it was not as bloody as Cell.

Re Duma Key

It must be genetics. I don't know too many people that like Insomnia as much as I do! I'm anxious to get Lisey's story back and re-read it. I liked the story, but remember there being something off in it...

Okay, I just finished reading this yesterday. I gotta say - this was a well written story, really engaged me, but...

was this supposed to be scary?

Great supernatural story, but I didn't think it was scary at all!

Re Duma Key

Glad you liked it Melanie. It IS a good story, and well written. IMO, most of King's stuff is - he's just got a rep as a hack.

I wouldn't consider Duma to be "horror". I wouldn't consider Dark Tower or The Stand to be "horror". I wouldn't consider most of his work to be "horror", but because most of his really early stuff took on that bend (think vampires, possessed hotel managers, and homecoming queens who go berserk ), that's how it gets categorized.

Okay, Cell is horror. Graphic, horrible, scarey, terrible horror. And that's pretty recent.

I'd call Duma (as well as 90% of his work) suspense...read Dolan's Cadillac if you aren't squeamish and want an ooky story that will not "scare" you, but will disturb you.

Re Duma Key

Actually, I think I'd classify most of his early stuff as "really scary". LOL Not quite horror like Cell - that was graphic and violent and very scary all at the same time - but still scary enough to make your heart thump and make you jump if someone said boo to you at the wrong time.

Duma wasn't even just plain scary. Maybe if he'd dwelled on the Perse events more and the lead-up less, I don't know.

And yeah, I don't think we can let Cindy go to Florida any more. Just in case.

Tom Gordon - not scary
Dark Half - scary
Pet Sematary - VERY scary, like can't even think about it scary

Re Duma Key

IT was a scary book. I don't like clowns either, and I do like Tim Curry, but the movie is just STUPID....it scared the crap out of Bree when she was little, and I recently rewatched it and couldn't believe how dumb it was.

Maybe I should do the same with the Pet Sematary movie, which scared the crap out of me the first (and only) time I've seen it.

Then again, no.

Has anybody seen the new SportsCenter commercial with Steven King? I about died laughing, but I had to explain it to Nick because he didn't recognize SK. I tried to find it online, but can't get any to come up here at work.

I don't know, I still can't see it here. Probably though. I'll have to check at home tonight. I've only seen one & from what I found today, I don't think there were others.
