Dexter

Are you watching the Dexter? Are you watching the Dexter?

We did Season One on DVD. We're finishing Season Two On Demand after acquiring Showtime specifically for the Dexter.

This is one of the best television shows ever. My short list for Most Amazing Television Dramas is:

The Sopranos, The Shield, Deadwood, The Wire....and now Dexter is on the short list.

Michael C. Hall is freakin' amazing. (There's that word again, "amazing", it's the jaw drop amazing --- every piece of Dexter is, "Who could think of that, amazing. Who could write with that much subtlety, amazing. Who could act with that much depth and nuance, amazing.)

I'm not a serial killer movie/story fan. I was slow to come to Dexter, despite all the "amazing" reports I heard, because that sort of story isn't my cup of tea. Can't do Silence of the Lambs, for instance, never have, never will. Can't watch network shows like Criminal Minds. Too depressing.

Dexter is.....life affirming? Yeah, I don't know how a show about a serial killer ends up being life affirming, but, amazingly, that's how it feels a lot of the time for me. (I self edit the gore by hiding my eyes like an 8 year old when necessary.)

Are you watching the Dexter? It's amazing.

This is one of the few shows that Bob, Kareem and I all enjoy. I'm kind of worried that CBS is running an edited version of it. I think it would weaken the series if new episodes were made for CBS instead of Showtime.

Agree. I read that it didn't fare well on CBS, so that's a good thing. I've never watched the edited versions of The Sopranos and Sex & The City. Can't fathom them sanitized.

Isn't this based on the book, Darkly Dreaming Dexter? That kinda freaked me out.

What scares me is that Showtime has had great shows before and then dumped them for no reason. (Dead Like Me) I would hate to see Dexter go away in a similar manner.

Ok--we just got a special preview for a month. I'll start watching. Today I saw Weed, I wasn't impressed.

Yes. I never read the book. And the show? Freak you out will cover it. But it's not really a *bad* thing.

I still haven't gotten over Dead Like Me. That's the reason I dropped Showtime to begin with, bastards.

All is not forgiven, still, I gots to have my Dexter. I'm all caught up now!

We have the first season of Weeds, haven't watched it yet, on DVD.

Re Dexter. MUST watch in order. See if Season 1 is On Demand, but you must watch in order. If you can't watch Season 1 in order, don't watch anything. (Not that I'm bossy or anything)

I'm pretty sure you can find it on SurfTheChannel.com and Sidereel.com. Probably Hulu, as well, but I'm not as sure about that one.

Re Dexter

I too love Dexter and really miss Dead Like Me.

I got a coworker hooked on the show, and actually just gave her the book Darkly Dreaming Dexter for BAFAB week. BAFAB: Buy a Friend a Book!

I hear it differs from the series. I also bought her the sequel, which departs significantly from the second season of Dexter, but I'm giving her that for her birthday.

I saw the DVD for Dexter at Target's today for $29.99. I have no idea if that's a good price or if it's hard to find. Don't know Dexter (and think that's a good thing).

That's the same price at Amazon today. Second season is 25.99 today. DVD TV show prices bounce all around on Amazon. I've paid as much as over $30, depending.

Vs movie prices, good TV shows are a relative bargain. 12 episodes first season, not quite an hour each, better deal than a less than 2 hour movie for $15.99 or so. Even better deal, Netflix.....

I do like to own shows that I really like, collector in me. It will now bug me that I own Season One but watched Season Two on demand. Not quite enough to spend $26.00 though.

Yeah, I caught something about BAFAB on somebody's twitter today.

If I wasn't really far behind in a stack of books, I'd contemplate the Dexter book but.....I've been watching too much teevee!

Re Dexter

See, I have this problem with Dexter. The family friend who insisted that I rent Dead Like Me because it was so awsome looks very much like Dexter, and in his crazier incarnations this friend could have played the part of Dexter, no problem. He grins like that, and everything. This guy has gone through some very dark periods in his life. So, I've only seen one episode, was doubly spooked by it.

We added Dexter to our Blockbuster queue. So far, we've watched the first 4 episodes -- we're hooked.

Is Dead Like Me worth adding to the queue? IOW, did they actually give it an ending, or did they just drop it so we'll be mad when we come to the end of the episodes?

It's worth watching, Judy. They did just drop it, but each episode pretty much stands on its own as far as entertainment. The only real story line that got dropped was Rube's past, which is mysterious and never really explained.

In theory, a Dead Like Me movie is on its way too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Like_Me_(film)

It didn't exactly end, but it came to a conclusion. Too bad it got cancelled; it might have had one more good season in it. Of course, Mandy Potemkin may just have jumped ship at that point, like he did with Criminal Minds, so who knows how it might have turned out?

Re: Mandy.

This is *exactly* what I thought when he bailed on Criminal Minds. "Huh, well he could have screwed up Dead Like Me even if the idiots at Showtime didn't cancel it."

The only reason Dead Like Me isn't on my very short list of the most amazing teevee shows ever is because it hurts too much to remember the loss.

There was so much more to do with that.

Re Dexter

It was an amazing series on so many levels. It's been awhile since I've seen an episode, and maybe I'll go through the series again. I think I have the first season on DVD, but then I would have to be able to rent the rest. The characters are so real, just thinking about the show brings it all back. It was a real loss when it ended. (Of course, thinking about the show also makes me want to find a coffee shop, sit in a booth, and order breakfast. Maybe waffles.)

Dexter is clearly not suitable viewing for my 13 year old.

What about Dead Like Me? What rating would you give that?

Not suitable for a kid if you have problems with language or dark humor.

He's learned not to use inappropriate language, but I am concerned about the dark humor. He tends to have nightmares -- one of several reasons I wouldn't let him watch Dexter. OTOH, if it was up to me, I probably wouldn't let him watch half the movies Bob lets him watch.
