My mother in law is due to arrive here any minute now, so I probably won't be giving any more clues until tomorrow sometime (so don't go crazy on me!) |

| | Mother in Law? That a clue?
Hmmm... let's see...
Is there a Mother in law in it?
Does someone go crazy in it?
Is it also a musical as well as a kind-of comedy?
Was it directed by a well-known, household name kind of a director?
Is it a dessert topping and a floor wax?
What do you really think of your mother in Law?

| LMAO ... Chris, I was thinking the same thing, well except for the floor wax/desert topping.
My question, err, questions ... Is it a horror as well?
Was it made by MGM?

| | To sum up: a movie in English, in color, not animated, made between 1945 and 1959 in the U.S. The lead is male, and the director is (or was) well-known. It's a comedy of sorts, not a musical, and not (really) a horror. It got no Oscar nominations, and was not made by MGM.
Is the director still alive?

Was it made after 1954?
Is it available on DVD?
Does your Mother in Law like it?

| | Hmmm..
Well I would have said 1958's Indiscreet since you said the director didn't win a Best Director he could have still won (as Donen did)) an honorary 1998 Oscar... but he's still alive.
Bell Book and Candle might have worked out, but Richard Quine is hardly a household name
and
Pillow Talk is a stretch plus director Michael Gordon is not very well known.
So how about
The Trouble with Harry (1955) Hitchcock's dark mystery/comedy. Hitch never won an Oscar for directing believe it or not. He did win a Thalberg later on.
