| | All right then? What is the best cover? | | Again a tough one, primarily because "best" can mean so many things. Is it "close to the original"? Is it most imaginative? Is it most capturing the essence of the original?
Here are a few:
1. Closest to the original: Misty Mountain Hop, on Encomium (tribute to Led Zeppelin). I don't recall the group, but if you heard it, you might not know it wasn't the original, except it is a female singing.
2. Best cover not even close to the original: Going to California by Never the Bride on Encomium
3. Best cover by the original artist: Down by the Sea - Robert Plant and Tori Amos on Encomium (are you beginning to see why this is on my top 10 albums list)?
4. Best cover where you didn't know it was a cover: Tie: Jimi Hendrix - All along the watchtower (really, who ever listened to the original by Dylan) and Peter Paul and Mary - Leavin' on a Jet Plane (John Denver wrote it, though most people think that he did the cover)
5. Most powerful cover: Don't let 'em bring you down: Annie Lennox on Medusa (originally by Neil Young)
6. Best cover that conveys a different feeling than the original: Rocket Man - Kate Bush on Two Rooms
7. Best cover you never heard of: The Maker (written by Daniel Langois) - Dave Matthews Band - never appeared on a released album until the new Chicago concert album. I just heard a duet with Tracey Chapman that was great as well.
8. Best cover albums (multi-artist tribute): Encomium - Led Zeppelin / Two Rooms - Elton John and Bernie Taupin
9. Best cover albums (single artist multi cover): Annie Lennox - Medusa (by far) but also Everything but the Girl - Acoustic
10. Most well meaning cover album that just doesn't get there: Tribute to Fleetwood Mac Rumours

| | Can we please, please do a Beatles cover thread instead? There are so many good ones:
EW&F on Got To Get You Into My Life
Rod Stewart on Get Back
many, many more... |

| | When I first started reading this thread my mind went straight to Medusa. 'Ceptin' my pick for best track would've been Whiter Shade of Pale. Awesome collection.
Another one that I found suprisingly good was Sinead O'Connor's, Am I Not Your Girl?. Say what you want about her, but that woman does torch songs quite well.

| | Oh, I get it. A cover is like a remake, right?
I like the way Celine Dionne and ..and...some guy turned When I Fall in Love into a duet.

| | Here's an interesting one I forgot - some guy who's name I don't remember doing an acoustic version (sans background vocals) of "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel. |

| | I really liked Everything but the Girl's version of Downtown Train, by Tom Waits.....
but my vote would have to go to Sarah Polley's version of Courage, sung in The Sweet Hereafter, originally recorded by Canada's best band, The Tragically Hip.

| | My favorite cover is Sebastian Bach's cover of Ozzy's "Crazy Train." Even better was hearing Bach talk about Ozzy when I met him. He's not too happy with the man. | | |
