Movie Melodies #2

Let's try one more. It'll be maybe a wee bit tougher so I'll start off with a couple of basic clues right away:

1) Made after 1950
2) Yes, made in color
3) American film (boy, is it an American film)

Okay, there go your clues to start off with. Go for it.

P.S. In deference to my pal, Grouch, I specifically did not pick something scored by John Williams.

Your old music cannot sustain you through a life, not if you're someone who listens to music every day, at every opportunity. You need input, because pop music is about freshness, about Nelly Furtado and the maddeningly memorable fourth track on a first album by a band you saw on a late-night TV show. And no, that fourth track is not as good as anything on Pet Sounds or Blonde on Blonde or What's Going On, but when was the last time you played Pet Sounds? - Songbook by Nick Hornby

Are the songs all (or mostly) instrumental?

if not, is the movie Grease?

Good questions:

Answer 1: The songs (soundtrack is mostly score, not songs) are not mostly instrumentals.

Answer 2: The movie is not Grease (although VH1 played the heck out of that one this week)

Was the music nominated for any Oscars?

If so, did it win?

Were the songs written originally for the movie
(the songs, not the score)?

Were the songs recorded (re-done) specifically for the movie?

Sounds like several featured songs in the movie didn't make it onto the soundtrack... true?

Answer 3: The music was nominated for an Academy Award.

Answer 5: The songs were (for the most part) originally done for the movie. They are clearly identified as "belonging" to that movie.

Answer 6: Even a featured song sung by the cast (oy, what a clue!) made it on to the soundtrack.

Answer 8: The "oy" was Joubert talking, not a clue. It is not Fiddler. But Fiddler is coming to Wolf Trap here in DC this month. I'm thinking of going. Oh, off topic, oops.

I had it down to 'Top Gun', 'An Officer and a Gentleman' and 'Thank God It's Friday'. Someone beat me to it. Congratulations.
