Thumbs down How dare they!!

Self-immolation, anyone?

Ok, maybe I'm being a bit extreme. However, have a look at the plans to market a 'New and Improved' Narnia, and then tell me what you think:

Marketing 'Narnia' Without A Christian Lion

Oh, yuck.

How corporate of them ... and condescending, too.

Ailsa
who read all the "Narnia" series even though no one in her family is Christian

Shake

I am absolutely horrified. I've also read the entire series- about 5 times! It's one of my favourites, and my children love it just as much as I do - and we're all Orthodox Jews! If I am offended by the changes due to marketing, how will those who are Christians feel about this?

I hope that this backfires big time. What’s next, a politically correct Pat the Bunny? Musn’t touch little animals, they might bite you.

Narnia without the Christian subtext isn’t Narnia at all.

The
RAGE

this provokes in me prevents me from discussing this in a logical manner. I would just end up getting choked up with epithets and there would be too much passionate spittle on my computer screen for me to see what I was even typing.

Let's just say this is the Bad Idea of the Decade.

No! No! No! No! No! No! No!

What idiocy!

How insulting to every reader!

I'm spluttering....I'm with David, I can't write 'cause I can't hear my own thinking over the bubbling blood in my ears.

I'm with Grouch on this one!

I'm still upset they decided to change the order of the books from what they were originally written! Mess with the stories and I'll be absolutely apoplectic!

I'll say this - I'm Christian. Been going to church since the first Sunday after I was adopted at 6 mo. old. And when I read the Narnia series, I had no idea there were "Christian themes" involved. It wasn't until later when I read somewhere else about C.S. Lewis being a "Christian author" and that Narnia was supposed to be a Christian allegory that I saw it. I don't see any need to mess with the stories. For those who believe, they can read in what they want. For those who don't, it's just a nice set of stories.

YUCK! what a STUPID idea-I can not see how they can possibly 'remove' the christian ideals from the books without destroying them compleatly.

The books are fine as they are, many non-christians read the books and honestly-I didn't realize the christian factors to the books till I was in my teens.

What's next? Rewritting the bible to make IT politically correct?

[sarcasm on] Hey, I agree with the idea completely. Just think of all the poor non Christians whose lives are absolutely ruined by reading the Narnia books. I mean, as a Christian, I know my self esteem plummeted when I read 'All of a Kind Family' and other books with Jewish characters. And, I'm thinking of reporting my mom for child abuse. When I was young, she gave me Little Women to read. A book about a white family! Not a black person in it. I was brainwashed for years into loving that book, but I've seen the light! No more books where people have any religion (even if the allusions aren't even that obvious, unless you know what they're alluding to), no color for characters, unless its grey.[sarcasm off]

Dear mtbat,

There is nothing wrong with your vision, and it's not that you lack imagination. They can't tamper with the books without destroying them.

We can hope this is a publicity stunt. If optimism fails, perhaps they will fail in the marketplace.

Best wishes,
Peter

And to Cindy: I'm not going to set myself on fire no matter what they do. But this is making it difficult to remember why it's so bad to burn books in town squares. It is bad, isn't it?

I've thought about this a little longer.

Perhaps the best thing to do is to let them spend a whole lot of money, publish the books, and market them to pieces. And then all the consumers should refuse to buy them. Maybe if it is a costly, financial flop for them, they'll see the error of their ways.

I'm afraid, though, that too many people will get pulled in by the marketing scheme, thinking they're getting Lewis quality material.

Narnia???

They are going to mess with Narnia?

Look, they want to update Nancy Drew, fine, fine, okay fine. Debate a little while, blah blah. Nancy Drew meant a lot to a whole bunch of us, but it's Nancy Drew. It's not Narnia.

What the hell is next after Narnia?

Are we going to "update" Little House on the Prairie so that Mom has a career outside the home?

Do Charlie's parents and the entire Wonka Chocolate factory get unionized? (Charlie's dad needed a union, for god's sake, what a shitty job screwing the top on those toothpaste tubes all day.)

You know, seriously, if "they" are coming for Narnia, Tolkien is not far behind.

They better not touch Narnia, or I'm coming for them.

Oh, and I can't wait to read the "sequel" to Lewis' The Great Divorce where heaven and hell go to a marriage counselor, reconcile and decide that they both didn't exist after all.

I'm also thinking that in order to make The Screwtape Letters more marketable, we're going to have to lose that whole Satan thing.

Who wants to buy a plush Satan, after all? It just kills the chance to get one of those Burger King Kid's Meal deals.

This is a man's life's work for God's sake!!!

 <--- I need to find a way more mad smilie. I'm looking!

It was bad enough when they renamed Ramona's doll Mercedes instead of Chevrolet. This can not be endured.

What is with publishers these days? They have dummied down all the great childrens books, and now they want to strip out the entire POINT of Narnia?!

Redlass, you are our representative in the publishing world. Go tell those people that they are idiots and get them to forget all about it.

Amy, I work for a company that publishes hospitality textbooks. I fear I can't do much about Narnia.

I'll rant and rave to all my co-workers, though...

Amy, that is a wonderful idea! I am going to find an address, and post it here, G-d willing.

That way, all of us booklovers can send the Lewis estate as well as HarperCollins a nice, personal note offering our own thoughs on the matter!

yes, burning books is a bad thing-but if they re-write narnia, I may make an exception!

okay fine-you want to sell more books-do a big publicity thing, make a bunch of stuffed lions, make a bunch of dolls but don't change the concepts, the words or the ideals in the books-leave those alone-they will sell just fine without being messed with!
