| | Screen Actors Guild to Nicole Kidman: Drop Dead | | Okay, perhaps they didn't phrase it that harshly, but her peers have not nominated her for one of their awards. They didn't nominate her for Moulin Rouge, for which she won a Golden Globe, or for The Others.
There used to be buzz that Kidman might get two Academy Award nominations this year. Does this affect her Oscar chances? Do you think the members of SAG judged Kidman's acting, or were they affected by loyalty to her ex-husband? |

| | Hmmm. This is all subjective. I for one, found Moulin Rouge to be mediocre, and found Kidman's performance to be lack-luster. I know I might go against the grain, but perhaps the judges felt like I did.
And the worst DVD I spent my money on this year goes to Moulin Rouge! |

| | I don't know if anyone who has ever seen a Broadway musical could have been satisfied with the weak vocal performances of Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge.
Back in the 1960's, when an actress couldn't sing (Audrey Hepburn, My Fair Lady) they hired a vocalist, Marni Nixon, to do the songs.
The tide turned when it was decided that Patti Lupone wasn't beautiful enough to do the film version of "Evita" and the directors went with Madonna.
Singing is so much more than carrying a tune. Kidman and McGregor stayed on pitch but their voices were thin and weak, lacking color and resonance. |

| | Oooh, I wanted to see that one. I will have to give "dibs" to my family members first, but if there are no takers, then YES! I would love to trade for Bridget Jones! Guess I better get reading though. I bought the book and told myself I couldn't see the movie until I read the book

Kidman and McGregor stayed on pitch but their voices were thin and weak, lacking color and resonance. | Actually, the "thin and weak" voices were what really appealed to me in their performances (and on the soundtrack). I bought the CD before I saw the movie and thought it was.... okay.
But once I saw the earnest yearning of Kidman and McGregor--those looks! those smiles!--I was thoroughly hooked. It was a nice sort of ironic dichotomy. Luhrmann was giving us this big, bold, bright, flashy hyper-musical....and yet, with his two leads, he gives us two non-singers who--though they may not have vocal perfection--deliver an emotional subtext that really packs a punch. I liked John Travolta in Grease for a lot of these same reasons, too. |

| | WHAT HE SAID!!
hehe... Man, I am not sure about some of you here. Moulin Rouge was hands down the best movie of the year. I'll admit that I was a bit - ummm - tentative going in. And the first 15 minutes didn't help much. But MAN, once the story kicks into high gear I was hooked. Seems like Hollywood can't do passion anymore, but this had it all.
I rented the DVD from Blockbuster. As SOOn as the credits started I popped it out & returned it... I continued on to Target where I picked up BOTH the soundtrack AND the DVD. Since then I have been hooked on both. Yeah, it was campy at times... and NO I don't think Kidman deserves an Oscar but the movie itself deserves recognition just for coloring outside the lines. Way too many movies work towards making money and playing it safe (thus all the sequels this year) Moulin Rouge didn't. I just think it was a fantastic movie.
In regards to the thin comment regarding the singing, yes she was a bit thin at times - but that lent her credibility. Take for example the song 'Hindi Sad Diamonds' - it just doesn't get much better than that. And yet at the same time I don't buy the comment in regards to Ewan... man he rocks. I think he should SING all his lines in the next two Star Wars movies... that'd be alright with me. "Amazing voice has he - shut up will he not?"
I guess that's what makes the world go 'round... varying opinions to the Nth. I do think that some of the hype about Kidman's amazing year this year sort of doomed her with Oscar. I don't think The Oscars follow along with the hype as much as other awards shows do. Dij | | |
