Well, since that whole adapted from a play bit knocked all of the Elvis films out of the running I am going to go out on a limb here and guess 1962's The Music Man? Your limb is strong. Sound the trombones! Strike up the coronets! It is indeed The Music Man

When I saw that I had Mystery Movie #76, I just couldn't resist. One of my very favorite musicals and just great fun to watch.
By the way, when I go to Robert Preston's biography page at IMDb, I get this picture:
