| | Confession Time. The one reason I will always have a VCR is that I have 15 plus years of Grammys on video tape. Just the sort of thing that a compulsive music fan would do.
But I'm not entirely thrilled about this year's show, which seems stale to me. The live version of Lady Marmalade ought to be interesting - especially now that Patti Labelle is joining the ladies. I've oft opined that neither Mya nor Lil' Kim can cut it outside a studio. We'll find out it in a couple of days because there ain't no lip synching at this show.
I'm also looking forward to the Tony Bennett / Billy Joel duet on New York State of Mind. I saw Joel perform this in concert a month ago in DC, and his voice hasn't been as strong in years. (Having Elton there helped too, but as much as I love Elton, I'll take Tony Bennett anyday)
Funny how we think of folks we know when we look at lineups. When I read the show's final format and saw that DMB had indeed stuck, my first thought was "I know where Mike Risch is gonna be." And the 'N Sync & Nelly number has KFH's name all over it.
But as to the awards, does anyone see a chain of events other than U2 sweeping everything short of Best New Artist and Best Rap/Hip-Hop Performance?
And while John Stewart is an amusing guy and strong joke writer, I'm not very impressed with his hosting abilities.
All in all, this year strikes me as somewhat lackluster. |

| | | Joubert,
I rarely watch the grammys, the emmys, or the oscars. I never find award shows to be exciting. Sure, there might be a couple of neat moments, but more than likely those get repeated elsewhere.
And thanks for thinking about me re: the nelly/nsync combo |

| | TiVo Rocks. If DMB is on, I get it recorded, whether or not I know it is on. Saw a great politically incorrect that way.
Grammy's suck. I have not been impressed with the nominations or selections in years, and for a music show, there are often better performances on Saturday Night Live.
Jon Stewart is one of my favorites. I really like his talk show hosting abilities, though I have not seen him host a show like this. |

| | Hmmm. I didn't think U2 was the favorite. I thought Alicia Keys would get most of the awards. U2's audience is rather limited, compared to Alicia Keys'. Oh well, we'll see what happens tomarrow night.
Margaret, who can name at least fifty people who never heard U2's Beautiful Day song, but cannot name one who has not heard Fallin', but has been wrong about award shows before (Jethro Tull ) |

| | Early Grammy Night Observation | | Bob Dylan needs to retire.
Jeez...he looked like some sort of Slim Whitman puppet or something. And sounded like hell.
:blech:
Lynn
who needs to sanitize the TV screen after that one

Alicia Keys is playing some small venues, but U2 sold out 4 shows at Oakland and was a solo act at the Super Bowl halftime. Quote: Originally posted by magenta321 Bob Dylan needs to retire | Some say he is resurging like never before. He won an Oscar last year, I think. I haven't seen tonight, though. |

| | Well, my sweetie Alicia has won three so far, and U2 only won one, no? Perhaps things could shake up yet... how long does this thing run?
And did you happen to hear Dylan tonight? Wow. That was painful. Not as painful as Nelly Furtado, but still. But anyway, you atributed a quote to me which I did not write on that one. However, I agree with Lynn, who did post that which you quoted.
Out of curiousity... India Arie sang "Change Gonna Come" at the begining of her performance tonight. I've heard a lot of black artists sing that song, and I've always liked it. Is it more or less a standard, or is there someone in particular that made that song so popular. That's one song I definately need to download. (Unless the version I have on my Capone and Noreaga disc is the original with Capone and Noreaga's thoughts dubbed into it).
Oh, U2 just won another one. WTG Michael. I still would have prefered Alicia, Outkast, and Train, in that order, over U2. |

FYI, I had no view that U2 should win anything (isn't his last year's album?). I was just taking umbrage at the wide audience thing. |

| | Don't read if you don't want to know who won | | Alicia Keys won five, including the unfortunate Kiss of Death, Best New Artist. U2 won 4, including Record of the Year. It's a weird overlap year, Michael, like basketball season.
Um, no disrepect to the talented Ms. Keys, but she's got six or seven more critically acclaimed albums to release before she begins comparing with U2. Frankly, I never cared a lot for their sound, but I recognize their talents and skills and respect them a great deal.
Haven't seen the show yet, but will watch the tape tomorrow. Ain't vacation week grand? | | |
