| | Name your first single (45) and album! | | I'm thinking that anyone under 25 is saying, "What's a 45?" (I even had 33s and 78s!)
My first 45 was Terry Jacks' "Seasons in the Sun." It was the summer before I started kindergarten, so ... hmmm... 1973. I should have posted that kindergarten pic with my profile - complete with SMOCK TOP (remember those, women?).
My first album was Queen's "A Night at the Opera." I still have it, along with every other Queen album, including some bootleg live stuff from before they recorded their first album.

| | Oy. I'm slow on the uptake tonight.
My first album was probably The Magic Garden, but the first grown-up album I had was Thriller.
Anyone remember their first cassette? Mine was the Rocky IV soundtrack, and my favorite song on there was "In The Burning Heart." Sigh.
My first cd? Aerosmith Pump. |

| | I never bought singles--I always went for the whole hog.
But I distinctly remember my first vinyl:

| | My first single was Glen Campbell singing "Sitting by The Dock of the Bay" It came in a box of laundry detergent!
Poor kid, for years I thought that was Glen Campbell's song! Who is that Otis Redding character singing Glen's song?
I'm not sure the first 45 I bought, but I had a slew of them. They were .99 in Woolco and pretty much the whole reason I babysat every week. That and nail polish.
My first vinyl, I will never, ever, ever forget. Elton John Caribou.
My poor Southern mother. She had to listen to The Bitch is Back about 40 million times (it was my only album for awhile) and her newly teenage daughter singing it at the top of her lungs. Oh, Andrea, that word isn't nice.

| | I'm bypassing all the Disney(esque) stuff. I'm assuming that doesn't count.
The first single I bought for myself is actually a trio. I blew big allowance bucks that day. I think I spent $1.50. My mother kicked in her hard earned greenbacks for a psychedilic 45 storage box with carrying handle. I was so proud of that thing.
I proudly carried that box all the way home containing the following 45's:
The Archies, Sugar Sugar
The Jackson 5, ABC
Simon and Garfunkel, Cecilia
It was 1970 or 71. I was 10 years old. Cut me some slack.
The first album I acquired (We're talking a $3 investment here) was Simon and Garfunkel's Bookends.

| | Bought my first single at a pawn shop, it was Queen, "We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions", used. The "box" was in pretty bad shape, but the tape played First single I bought that wasn't used was Des'ree, "You Gotta Be" I think.
First CD was Sting's 84-94 Greatest Hits, just 'cause of the song "Fortress Around Your Heart". |

| | Oh dear.
My very first 45 purchase was a two-some. I brought home Band on the Run by Paul McCartney and Wings and.... Billy Don't Be a Hero
Shhhhh!
That was in third grade. Don't remember the exact year, but I was amoung the -
We're the best under the sun!
We're the class of 81!
You do the math.
But! The very first 45 kinda thing I owned was cut out from the back of a cereal box. What was that guy's name?? Oh hell. I'll worry about that all day. I can even picture him after all these years, but can't remember his name. Ah well. That's age for ya.
The very first album that I wanted was a Beach Boys thing when I was in second grade. But the very first album I could afford with my allowance was The Who Tommy. Took me weeks to save up and :drum: :drum: I had to give up skating that weekend at the rink.

You're in good company. My first 45 was 'Sugar, Sugar' by the Archies as well.
I'm trying to remember the first album I bought for myself. I think it was 'Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits' but I could be wrong...

| | OH! Fun Thread - thank you! | | I adore music! I collect music, especially vinyl, but I have a huge (and I do mean huge - the music and the books have their own room, so we can never have guests sleep over ) collection of 78s, 33s, 45s, 8-Tracks, Cassettes, CDs, mp3s etc.
Back to the question though:
Fisher Price turntable and "records" not included, of course...
First 78: Benny Goodman Orchestra
First 8-Track: Patsy Cline "Greatest Hits"
First 45: Johnny Cash "Long Black Veil"
First LP (long playing vinyl): Aerosmith "Done with Mirrors"
First Cassette: Sex Pistols "Never Mind the Bullocks..."
First CD: Depeche Mode "Black Celebration"
First mp3: Dave Mathews Band with Blues Traveller "Gin and Juice: Bootleg" Leslie

| | My first single was some Partridge Family thing.
When I got to albums, I started with the sound track to Tommy.
I'm not sure what happened between those 2 purchases, but I'm glad that my tastes changed! |

My first LPs were a bungle deal I got with the turntable (over a dozen). It was a crazy mix of vinyl including Louis Armstrong, The Doors and even Christmas carols... |

| | My first vinyl albums were children's albums.
Did you know that Jerry Lewis (yes, that Jerry Lewis, not Jerry Lee Lewis) made an album of singing children's songs?
The first 'real' album is the same one as Grouch has (see his Captain & Tennille item above).
I still have that album, BTW, in vinyl. I have all their albums in vinyl. In fact, I have most of them as duplicates (there was one I was missing and I got it on ebay, but only as a set of all the albums -- anybody need a Captain & Tennille album?)
I think my first 45 was 'You Light Up My Life'. |

| | My first real album was a Credance Clearwater Revival record, though I can't remember now which one.
I don't know if I ever bought any 45s. My parents had a huge collection and I would listen to theirs.
Though I didn't buy them, the 8-tracks I listened to the most often were Olivia Newton-John's early stuff (pre-Grease) and Helen Reddy.

| | I know what 45s are.
First album I ever bought on my own on cassette tape was the soundtrack to Ghostbusters. I think I still got it around here somewhere. The second one was (shudder) an MC Hammer album. I was 13 at the time.
First ones I bought on CD were Nirvana's Nevermind and Pearl Jam's Ten.

| | I had a stack of children's 33 records. My mother used to put one dot on side 1 and two dots on side 2 so I'd know what side to put it on.
My first tape was Amy Grant's "The Collection." It was from a friend for my birthday in 6th grade. I was very disappointed that it wasn't Debbie Gibson.
My first single was Bryan Adams singing that awful "Everything I Do, I Do It For You" song.
My first CD was...I'm not sure. My first CD player was attached to a stereo. The CD player broke almost right away and we got it repaired a couple of times but then gave up. I couldn't justify getting a new one when I had this nice stereo. So I didn't get a CD player that worked until about 1996.

| | Re: Name your first single (45) and album! | | It wasn't a 45 I bought, it might've been my mom's, but I used to listen to "Sky Pilot" by Eric Burdon and the Animals all the time. The song took up both sides of the 45 and I'd listen to it at various speeds. But what really attracted me to the song was when it would go "Skyyyyyy Pilot...how high can you fly?" and there would be this echo effect on "fly". I thought it was amazing.
The first record I listened to that wasn't kiddie fare was my mom's MEET THE BEATLES. I listened to that all the time. The song "It Won't Be Long" caught my attention with the "yeah...yeah...YEAH....yeah" being sung in a kind of high/low/high/low manner.
The first record that was MINE was Kiss' ROCK AND ROLL OVER. That was the one that made me a diehard fan. I think I might've been the only one in my 2nd grade class drawing the Kiss logo on my book covers.
I think my first cassette tape was Black Sabbath's PARANOID.
My first cd was Pearl Jam's "Jeremy" single, but I bought it mainly for "Yellow Ledbetter".

| | Re: Name your first single (45) and album! | | My first album was Elvis Presley when I was six or so. I had a big crush on him and used to stare at the cover. The first 45 I purchased with my allowance, Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", came in 5th grade to take to my friend's slumber party.
