| | Introducing Balderdash - EA style. | | From the box:
Balderdash is a bluffing game. Players try to bluff each other by creating phony definitions for some of the zaniest, most unbelievable words in the English language. Players are awarded points for bluffing as well as for choosing the correct meaning.
The official rules for the board game are available here: BALDERDASH, but since we'll be playing on-line our rules will be a little different.
Here is the plan:
I shall post a word.
Each player should send me a PM with their definition of the word. It is important that the submissions remain a secret; you may tell others that you have submitted a definition, but please do not say what it was. Please submit all definitions without the addition of adj./verb/n. or pronounciation information. If the Balderdash answer card includes any of that then I will also drop it from the definitions list.
I am imposing no specific time frame for the submissions. As soon as I have at least five definitions then I will post them. You will then have a chance to vote for the correct definition. I envison that some days we may do several words, while at other times it may take a couple of days to do one word; it just depends on everyone's schedule.
The voting is public. Feel free to discuss your vote, without, of course, saying which definition is yours. Some players like to vote for their own definition in the hopes of tricking others into voting, but if you do that you do not earn a point for voting for yourself.
You earn 1 point every time someone votes for your definition.
You earn 2 points if you guess the correct definition.
You earn 1 point for being the first person to guess the correct definition.
You may vote even if you did not submit a definition.
You may still earn points for your definition even if you do not vote.
Bragging Rights
I am going to figure out a way to highlight players with high scores earned after playing a specific number of words. For example, I'll keep a running total of the highest scores of players who have participated in 20 games. I'm still working on this, and I am open to suggestions.
Want to Google?
In the board game players can earn points for submitting the real definition. Since we are playing on-line, for an unspecified time period, it would be too easy to Google the word (or use :gasp: a dictionary). I think the game would loose its enterainment value if people looked up the word. Try to be spontaneous, write what you think might be funny, or what might attract the most votes.
Here is the example from the box: You just ran into a perwitsky!
Was it ...
1. An old school chum?
2. A rare species of tropical tree whose roots smell like perfume?
3. A corner store?
4. A European skunk whose fur is used to make paint brushes?
5. A door to door doorknob salesman?
Ready?
I will start a new thread with the first word of the game. It is late Sunday night, so I don't expect too many players tonight, but I hope things pick up during the week.
Have Fun! 20020618 13:30 EST - Edited to add: You earn 1 point for being the first person to guess the correct definition.*
Effective 20020618 with word keddah. 20020617 23:30 EST - Edited to change: The first player(s) to reach 21 Wins.

| | Yay. I'll play. But, how do we know when "everyone" has submitted their definition and we can vote.
And how can we be sure people won't cheat. Will the honor system be enough?
How often will a new word be posted?
Sorry to innundate you with all of these questions. |

Quote: Originally posted by magenta321 And how can we be sure people won't cheat. Will the honor system be enough? | I guess we cannot be sure, but it won't be much fun those who just look up the real answer. The object of the game is to get as many points as possible, but winning isn't everything. Whenever I've played in RL the fun part has been hearing all the imginative definitions and trying to write one that will trick the other players. Quote: Originally posted by magenta321
How often will a new word be posted? | The time period will vary. If I'm on-line and I get a series of quick responses from enough people then I will try to keep the game rolling. If people are answering sporadically throughout the day, then I will not start a new word until I have enough votes. So, "how often"? I'm not sure Quote: Originally posted by magenta321
Sorry to innundate you with all of these questions. | No problem! I figured I wouldn't think of everything the first time around. Later on I will update the rules post with the above Q&As.
Keep the questions coming!

| | Another rule:
The Balderdash definitions listed on my cards are the final authority for this game.

| | How long will the voting for each word be open? Will a new word for defining become available only when the voting for the old one is complete or will it be provided once you've collected enough definitions for a vote?

I have already received some PMs. You guys are great! I figure we should have enough definitions by tomorrow morning. I'll reply to each PM when I post the poll. Since it is our first word I will try to wait until everyone who submitted a definition has had a chance to vote.
... ah ... it just occurred to me that I can have more than one word going at a time. If I'm only waiting on one person to vote then I might start a new word while I leave the first one open.

| | LOL, Janice, I must have been typing my last post while you were posting your questions. Quote: Originally posted by quasar How long will the voting for each word be open? | I think I'll leave it open until most, if not all, of the players who submitted a definition have voted.
People who have not submitted a definition can still vote. So if you submit a definition but do not have time to vote, you may still earn points.
Hmm ... I think I can put a closing date/time frame on the voting polls. Maybe I'll experiment with that. Quote: Originally posted by quasar Will a new word for defining become available only when the voting for the old one is complete or will it be provided once you've collected enough definitions for a vote? | The more I think about it the better I think it will be to open up a new word even if I'm waiting for a player or two on the previous word.

| | The list of definitions has been posted for the first word. I'll go ahead and start another word, but I will leave the first word open for voting.

| | I am going to change the way the winners are calculated. Since it's for bragging rights, not prizes, I'm assuming it is okay to make some changes as we go along.
Instead of the winner being the first person to reach 21 I am going to figure out a way to highlight players with high scores earned during a specific number of words (rather than within one game). That way people can play whenever they are available without worrying about missing some words within a game.
Do not worry I'll figure it out

| | I have posted the scores for the first word.
Congratulations to theeye and phoenixx who tied for first place. They each chose the correct answer and each of them wrote a definition that was chosen by another player.
The second word was posted earlier on Monday. Send in those PMs!

| | I figure that as soon as I get five or more replies I will post 'em for guessing. I will try to wait to calculate the score until everyone who submitted a definition has a chance to guess.
If I waited longer for more entries then I'd worry that those who submitted early will lose interest (not that ya'll have a short attention span, it's just fun when the game moves along quickly), or that there will be too many definitions to choose from.

And as another comment below suggests, too many definitions could be a problem. Perhaps take them in rotation ? Again, if you're not living online often you may never hit the first five or six received....
Just some thoughts........
