| | Five, just because come-along is a word I love.
It means, er, um, uh....well, in my personal experience, it is a jury-rigged (q.v.) arrangement for moving something too big to carry or put in a wheelbarrow. Like, say, a winch, or more likely an informal pulley setup. But that's a purely pragmatic definition, and I would hate to violate the spirit of the game by looking it up in the dictionary.

Like, say, a winch, or more likely an informal pulley setup. | You take the hook on the come-along (unfortunately the picture isn't yet showing) and attach it to the item you need to haul out of some place. Then, you secure the mechanism to a good anchoring point (preferably at a point where the large heavy item is intended to go. Then, as you crank the lever, a thingy (hence "whiddler") grabs the teeth in the cog that takes up the slack in the rope or chain connecting the come along to the large, heavy item. Should you suddenly lose your grip, the come-along locks into place, keeping large, heavy item from retreating.
We used a come along to haul an old forged iron coal stove out of our basement through the bulkhead.

| | Yes! That's it! What a gorgeous object. We use a come-along as part of the rig to haul the boat, sort of a backup to the electric winch. It is way ugly compared to that glamorous picture.
Sounds like whiddler would be a sort of a pawl (q.v.), except that that isn't what whiddler means
