Another groaner lateral thinking puzzle

Okay, here goes:

3 guys get stranded in the middle of a lake in their boat. They're okay, but just dyin' for a smoke. They've got a pack of cigarettes, but no matches or lighters. Yet, after a few minutes of thinking, they're all puffing away.

How?

Someone uses their eyeglasses (someone nearsighted) to light the first one.

Works nearly as well as a magnifying glass.

A lightbulb goes off over one of their heads, and that's enough to set off a cigarette.

Were they actually puffing on the cigarettes, or where they puffing because their lungs were bursting from the effort of trying to get back to land?
