"The Man in the Bar": lateral thinking puzzle

Another one from Paul Sloane's "Lateral Thinking Puzzles":

A man walked into a bar and asked the barman for a glass of water. They had never met before. The barman pulled a gun from under the counter and pointed it at the man. The man said "Thank you" and walked out. Why should that be so?

Was the "Bar" a bar like in a drinking saloon or tavern?
Was the "barman" a bartender?

Is it because those hand-held beverage dispensers that bartenders use mostly for soft drinks are called guns?

Was the bartender pointing the gun to protect the water-wanting man from someone else?

Re: "The Man in the Bar": lateral thinking puzzle

Did he want a glass of water because he was thirsty?
Does the fact that he asked for WATER make a difference (as opposed to a beer or a whiskey etc.,)

The bartender had never met the water-wanting man. Had the bartender's wife/girlfriend met him?

Did he want the water for another purpose besides drinking?
Was there a fire anywhere in the vicinity?

Re: "The Man in the Bar": lateral thinking puzzle

Was the gun a "pull the trigger bam you're dead" gun? (I mean, was it a "real" gun, in the sense of a pistol or rifle or shotgun-type gun.)

Was the man going to pour the water into something else?

Was the man going to take the water out of the bar?

Had the man ever been in the bar before?

Was Margaret Hamilton anywhere in the vicinity?

Was the man going to pour the water into something else? No. I should amend one of my earlier answers ... yes, the man was going to drink the water, but there is a reason behind that.

Was the man going to take the water out of the bar? No.

Had the man ever been in the bar before? Irrelevant.

Was Margaret Hamilton anywhere in the vicinity? Er, no. *scratches head because she's missing the reference*

Re: "The Man in the Bar": lateral thinking puzzle

Did the man have the hiccups and the bartender pointed the gun at him to scare away them away?

If this isn't it, how long will you let this go on? I'm tempted to get the book from the library so that I don't have to wait any longer, or try to borrow it from the local gun-toting bartender.
