| | Re: For Whom the Bell Tolls (lateral thinking puzzler) | | Here’s what you folks have figured out so far:
The man fell to his death, and it was accidental. The death was related to the bell’s ringing.
The man was blind.
The rope that broke was attached to the bell at one point. The bell was not on a cow, a seeing-eye dog, an elevator, a vehicle, a doorbell, or a church, nor was it being worn by the man. The bell was a signal of some sort.
The bell rang in spite of the rope breaking. The rope breaking was not intentional. |

| | Re: For Whom the Bell Tolls (lateral thinking puzzler) | | Did the man touch either the rope or the bell?
Did the man have anything to do with the rope breaking?
Was the man trying to ring the bell?
Did the man have eggs for breakfast? (OK, just kidding, but this is how far off the mark I feel on this one.,... )

Time for a hint: it might help to figure out where the man was, and what he was doing. |

Outside?
In the mountains?
At the beach?
In the woods?
In the country?
In the city?
In a car?
Taking a walk?
Riding a bike? (Oh wait, scratch that - he is blind)
Was he in Philly? Was the bell the Liberty Bell?
Was he on a sidewalk?
Whew! LOL All I can think of at the moment

At the beach? Not the beach, no.
In the woods? No.
In the country? Hmmm, I'd have to say yes (as opposed to city).

Taking a walk somewhere near the ocean?
Walking along the deck of a ship?
Rocky cliffs near the ocean?
At a light house?

| | Re: For Whom the Bell Tolls (lateral thinking puzzler) | | I think he's in a boat. A bell rings - maybe a ship's bell. A rope breaks. The boat drifts off. The blind man gets dissoriented. He falls overboard and dies.
Is that it?
If not, can we just pretend it is? |

| | Re: For Whom the Bell Tolls (lateral thinking puzzler) | | Is the man swimming, or in the water? Is the bell from a buoy? Did the rope break, allowing the buoy to float away and he didnt realize he was so far out in the water and drowned? Got eaten by a shark? LOL I'm reaching here.

Or to combine mine with wormie, the buoy floats off, he thinks he is near the dock, falls overboard and drowns? You guys basically got it! He was walking along a cliff, using the buoy bell to judge his distance from the edge. When the rope broke, the buoy drifted off. Nice going! |
