Schedule Changes

My Turn!

Yes, it's my turn to discover an error in my plans. It does not affect anything we have done yet, fear not!

In the Fall schedules I need to include a time period for all the players to submit any necessary retreats and/or disbands prior to assessing the supply centers and processing build orders.

I'll update the rules/schedules with the new deadlines later this week. In the meantime the game continues as planned. Get those 1901 builds in!

Build Information
Your builds must be submitted by 9 PM EST on Wednesday, January 23rd.
You may only build a unit on one of your home provinces.
Here is an example of a valid build order:
-Great Power Name- would like to build a -unit type (fleet or army)- in -province name-.
Note: If you are building a fleet on a province that has two coasts, eg. St. Petersburg, you would have to specify which coast (North or South).
Do units have to built in provinces which are supply bases? I don't remember and haven't played in 20 years.

MNM, Diva of all the Italies, is pleased to announce that her citizens will be celebrating the annual 'Festival of the Feathers' over the next two weeks.

During this colorful celebration, the good citizens of Italy get their marabou, ostrich plumes and turkey boas out of their mothballs and parade in the streets, throwing small bundles of brightly dyed feathers to each other and there is nightly feasting and fireworks.

As Italy's embassies will be fully participating in the festivities, communications may be a bit erratic and slow between now and early February. Political communications should be submitted early for appropriate response.

Welcome Cert!

Yes, the build must be on an unoccupied Supply Center in the player's home country.

20 years, eh? I bet not much has changed. Please drop by again, and feel free to offer your thoughts/questions as the game progresses.

Talking

Thank you for the welcome. It has been 30 years since I first played, the Holy Roman Empire version.
The game should heat up now as almost all neutral countries are occupied and future gains come at another country's expense. Watch your backs.

A particularly astute piece of advice, certiorari, that we would all do well to heed. Many thanks to you, gracious sir.

Observations and speculations...

Austria-Hungary
Army Budapest
Army Rumania
Army Trieste
Army Vienna
Fleet Greece

England
Army Belgium
Army London
Fleet Liverpool
Fleet North Sea
Fleet Norway

France
Army Gascony
Army Paris
Army Portugal
Fleet Marseilles
Fleet Spain North Coast

Germany
Army Kiel
Army Ruhr
Fleet Denmark

Italy
Army Piedmont
Army Venice
Fleet Naples
Fleet Tunis

Russia
Army Ukraine
Army Warsaw
Fleet Baltic Sea

Turkey
Army Bulgaria
Army Constantinople
Army Sevastopol
Fleet Black Sea
Fleet Smyrna

England has seized Norway, which is normal, and Belgium (more daring). The building of an Army in London suggests England may be seeking to become a land power. Expect British soldiers to be visiting the continent of Europe soon, and not to build sand castles.

France grabbed the Iberian peninsula as expected. The building of a fleet in Marseille suggests a move to dispute Italian control of the Western Mediterranean. A battle for Tunis is not out of the question.

Germany is in a state of civil disorder and can expect to be partitioned Polish style if this persists.

Italy has taken up defensive positions on land. Her fleets could dominate the Western Mediterranean. She needs to keep her eye on France and Austria-Hungary.

Austria-Hungary could continue to march against Russia, or attack a weakened Germany. She is well positioned to move in any direction.

Russia is in trouble. She needs to get Sweden as a supply base. OTOH the British fleet in Norway could move into St. Petersburg at any time. She might be able to get Berlin if German civil disorder continues.

Turkey could move north against Russia. Her fleet in the Black Sea now seems misplaced. What is she planning to do with the Smyrna fleet? She can control the Eastern Mediterranean with two fleets.

Happy hunting.

Ah yes. I have had many inquiries as to what has happened with Germany's orders as of late. I must admit, it was not truly a matter of civil unrest in Germany. It was more of a matter of civil unrest in the von Magenta kingdom. You see, my dear sweet Rotweiler, Fifi, decided to eat my orders. Yes, the dog ate my orders.

But be prepared, both myself and my dear sweet Fifi have unified and are ready to take a bite out of anyone who dares mess with the Great Germany.

We in France would like to extend our sympathy for doggie troubles-our faithless Austrailan Shepard Max ate through our main line of communication three times last week(he really did eat the phone line three times in 4 days) Perhaps our dogs have their own agenda for world domination.

Official GM Announcement

As I mentioned earlier:

Quote:

I have updated the schedules. The original post has been updated with the following:

Quote:
All Moves, Adjustments, and Builds are to be submitted to me via an EA PM.

There are two seasons in Diplomacy: Spring and Fall. After the initial two week period for players to aquaint themselves with the rules, and each other, the Spring and Fall seasons will be one week apart with each falling on alternate Tuesdays.

Spring Moves are due by 9 PM EST on Tuesdays.
Spring Preliminary Results will be posted by Midnight EST on the same Tuesday.
Spring adjustments (if necessary) are due by 9 PM EST on Wednesday.
Spring Final Results will be posted by Midnight EST on the same Wednesday.

Fall Moves are due by 9 PM EST on Tuesdays
Fall Preliminary Results will be posted by Midnight EST on the same Tuesday
Fall adjustments (if necessary) are due by 9 PM EST on the Wednesday.
Fall supply center counts will be posted by Midnight EST on the same Wednesday.
Fall Builds and/or Disband orders are due by 9 PM EST on the Thursday
Fall Final Positions will be posted by Midnight EST on the same Thursday

The Starting Date for Game One is Tuesday January 01, 2002

You will have two weeks to conduct your opening negotiations.

Spring 1901 Moves are due Tuesday January 15, 2002

After Spring 1901 the negotiation periods are one week intervals.

Fall 1901 Moves are due Tuesday January 22, 2002

Spring 1902 Moves are due Tuesday January 29, 2002

Fall 1902 Moves are due Tuesday February 5, 2002
... etc.

As the game progresses the weekly schedule may be changed (sped up), depending on the remaining players wishes (and mine too, I guess).

A note regarding adjustments and builds/disbands:
The rules state that adjustments and builds/disbands must be done without a period of diplomacy. In other words when the game is played in person the players must submit their adjustments and build/disband orders without an opportunity to communicate with other players. In an on-line game such as ours it is not possible to control what happens between the time I post the preliminary results and the time when the adjustments and builds/disbands are due (the next night). So, if you wish to discuss your adjustments and builds/disbands with the other Great Powers please feel free to do so.

The big change is that after the moves are posted by me on Tuesdays you will have until Wednesday at 9 PM EST to submit any required adjustments (retreats or disbands). This means that in the Fall season you will then have until Thursday at 9 PM EST to submit your builds/disbands (if they are required).

If you have any questions please post them here or send me a PM.

Thank you!

From chair of Danube Ballroom Society

I have to admit a pang of disappointment within the circle of performing artists. Our troupe puts a great show for benefit of all and where is the press? Even Alek deTalkville decides that events are so boring that a column in a journal is too much.

Is it too hard to at least discuss the future of Europe's entertainment? Let's hope it is not on obituary pages...

I believe our trusty young Alek went in search of his lost Baedeker. Once he finds it he will no doubt return in full glory and will regale us with more of his travel tales. If not then I shall have him killed.

Attention Players:

Did I not promise you that Diplomacy would be addictive? Even more addictive than Junior Mints? To support my case I offer certiorari (if he doesn't mind ), an experienced player who has not played in some thirty years yet is drawn willingly (I hope) into our thread by the mere whisper of the word diplomacy .

You too will soon see the power of The game. Whether you are a conqueror or a conquered you will want another game trust me

Again I'd like to welcome Cert to the thread: You may be new but all your dips belong to us.

Players, as the game progresses I think we may see more observers tuning in to watch the diplomatic proceedings. I hope that they too find the time to post a comment or two since the livelier the conversation then the livelier the game. In my never ending attempt to remain an impartial GM (I'm really trying!) I will probably not comment very often on the various observers' comments, but I'm always here to answer questions if you have them.

Play On!

Aufrichtig

Did I mention that my German is rusty?

From chair of DBS,

Danke schön Fräulein Margarethe for your kind words,

You know this old proverb: Viele Köche verderben den Brei. It’s only partially right. Look at the British: they can use all the cooks they could get!

First of all, I never refuse invitation to something what possibly includes sauerkraut and sausages. And then, everybody knows: je mehr, desto besser!
I think we need to get the bohemian spirit going here, is way too serious. :p All those cutthroat negotiations are getting me thirsty. Talking about thirsty; I met an ugly, old general once who had unusual success with ladies. I asked him what was his secret. He said: the TRUTH!
But general,

I said, you could get slapped for the TRUTH!
He answered: Yes, but that’s the danger I’m willing to brave!
Sie können versichert sein, dass fun has just begun. So no matter what happens this Spring: Viel Spass! (This goes for Tzarina too…)

If your German is rusty, try this:

Wenn Ihr Deutsch rostig ist, versuchen Sie dieses:

Edited to add that something gets lost in the translation of Super Bowl Party.

I beg to differ, mein Herr! While I concede that certain of my compatriots are convinced that haute cuisine means boiling things in 100-degree temperatures, they are the exception rather than the rule. Anyone who has ever sampled a succulent leg of lamb or a delightful plum pudding (or even the prosaic fish and chips) will be quick to confirm that English cuisine matches up well against any other country's offerings.

From chair of DBS,

Oh come on, bitte, let’s be a bit objective. You can’t compare Haggis to Esterhazy Rostbraten or even Russian Beef Stroganoff. While nobody can prepare a schnitzel like my grandma, she has no clue what a lobster is. That’s nothing to be ashamed of, the lobsters are rather hard to come by in Alps…

I’m envious of French culinary talents and you should admit it too. Yes, in a military camp, a ram on a split over open fire is great, especially if there is enough beer to go around. However, no matter how many barrels of brew you wash it down with, you can’t put Lamb Leg on the table along Pheasant Des Rois!

Well, if it came to competition I’d prefer a challenge in music to the mastery of pots and pans.

Superschüsselbeteiligten? I'd never guess but I like the sound of it...
