| | Please visit this site to obtain a copy of the map. Note: It is not my site. When I was searching for an on-line map this site offered the best I could see. diplomacy-archive.com
This is where you can obtain your own copy of the map. I think I like this one best, but we'll see.
This is just for you to have a copy of the map as it exists prior to the first moves (Spring 1901). Once the moves are submitted and processed I will provide you with a map specific to EA's results.

| | The official board game rules. | | Please visit this site diplomacy-archive.com to obtain a copy of the board game rules. You may download the rules as a PDF* from a link to the Hasbro site.
We will use the current version offered, not the older versions. The current version is the 4th one, dated 2000.
It looks like a scan of the rules, and is slightly crooked, but at least it is a version provided by the Hasbro company, so we do not have to worry that we might be infringing on their property. Note: Even though this is free, if you find you are enjoying the game and think you may play some more after Game One is over, you may wish to consider purchasing the board game.
* You will need the Acrobat Reader to open/read the PDF. If you do not have Adobe's Acrobat Reader than you may download it for free from their site

| | Addendum to the official rules - aka Katherine's rules for playing on EA | | Communication between Players and the Games Master
To communicate with me (your Games Master) please use EA's PM system if your message is private, or enter a post in this forum. Do not use my hotmail e-mail account since a) I have a difficult time accessing it and b) I only look at it every few days or so. You may also schedule a time to CHAT with me about Diplomacy. Communication between Players
The method of communication between players is up to each player. You may use this thread, and/or PMs, and/or CHAT. If you wish to give your fellow players (one or more) alternate contact methods (e-mail, telephone, in person ... etc.) that is entirely done at your discretion. This should go without saying, but I'll say it anyway: if you are given someone's private contact information please do not abuse it - do not use it for any communication that is unrelated to Diplomacy, unless the other person approves. You are free to provide different means of communication to different players. Failed Communications - Tough Luck
If you are using systems other than EA to communicate with your fellow players, and if that communication is disrupted ... tough noogies all is fair in Diplomacy. The same goes for EA, if you are unable to access EA to submit your moves in time, but if I can still access EA to pick up the submitted moves by all the other players then I will proceed to process the moves I have. I strongly urge every player to submit moves as soon as they have a plan, even if there is a chance the plan may change. You are allowed to submit moves as often as you wish up until the 9 PM EST. deadline. I will always process the moves submitted closest to, without going past, 9 PM EST. If something happens to you just before 9 PM and you cannot send your moves, but you've already submitted an initial set at least you will have some control over your units. When I was a player I always sent my next season's moves the day after the previous season's results were posted, even if the moves were just a list of my units supporting each other, I knew that at least I wouldn't leave them stranded. Failed Communications - exceptions to the rule.
I am reasonable, trust me , if for some reason EA was unavailable for an extended period of time then at my discretion I might work out a new, temporary, schedule to cope with the problems. Updating your orders
Let's say you follow my suggestion to submit an order ASAP, and then decide later that you'd like to change one or more of the orders. You will have until 9 PM EST. on the deadline date to do so. However, please note: You must resubmit a move for each of your units, not just the one that is different than the original message. By that I mean ... let's say you first submitted moves for all four of your units. You later decide that the fourth unit should go somewhere else. If you send me a message with *just* the updated moves for the fourth unit, then that order PM will override all previous orders, which means that only the fourth unit will have a move order and everyone else will be left untouched/protected. So, when submitting your moves, always provide instructions for each unit. Posting of orders
When it is time to make each Great Power's orders public the rules state, "... players then reveal orders at the same time. Each player reads his/her orders while others make sure that what they hear is what is written." Imagine - cheating even when revealing one's orders! In on-line play I follow these reveal all guidelines by posting the relevant sections from the PMs that each Great Power submits. I might edit it to remove a question (to me) stuck inbetween an order, but for the most part you can expect that the orders you write are the orders everyone will see. Abbreviations
When you submit your moves to me please do not use abbreviations. Unlike the official rules of diplomacy where you are encouraged to use abbreviations for order instructions and country names, I prefer as much detail as possible. I've seen too many orders fail due to a typo in an abbreviation. Errors Errors by players
If you make an error in your submission unfortunately you can only correct it if you catch it prior to the 9 PM EST. deadline.
If you submit your moves to me and I notice an error in them I will not point it out to you. I do not want to risk a situation where I noticed an error by player A, and arranged for it to be corrected, but then miss an error by player B that causes them harm during the game.
If you ask me if a specific move is valid then I will of course do my best to answer you in a timely fashion. However, try not to leave your questions until the last minute, if I happen to be unavailable prior to the 9 PM deadline you will still be responsible for submitting your moves on time. Errors Errors by the Games Master (me)
If I make an error in processing the moves then I will correct the error, and announce the correction within this thread, if another season has not yet passed. If it is close to the next deadline, then I will contact the players to see if they would like to postpone the deadline in order to deal with the new/corrected results. If the error is not discovered until after a move, or more, has gone by then we will have to proceed with the game in its current state. I will, of course, do my best to avoid such a bad situation. Communication by non-players
If you are not a player you may still post in this forum, either to offer encouragement to the player or to ask your own questions about the game. Player Responsibilities
Please be sure to check this thread on a regular basis. You may decide to receive "Email Notification" on the thread, that way you'll always know when something new has happened. The e-mail is sent to the address you have listed in your EA Profile.

| | All Moves, Adjustments, and Builds are to be submitted to me via an EA PM.
There are two seasons in Diplomacy: Spring and Fall. After the initial two week period for players to aquaint themselves with the rules, and each other, the Spring and Fall seasons will be one week apart with each falling on alternate Tuesdays.
Spring Moves are due by 9 PM EST on Tuesdays.
Spring Preliminary Results will be posted by Midnight EST on the same Tuesday.
Spring adjustments (if necessary) are due by 9 PM EST on Wednesday.
Spring Final Results will be posted by Midnight EST on the same Wednesday.
Fall Moves are due by 9 PM EST on Tuesdays
Fall Preliminary Results will be posted by Midnight EST on the same Tuesday
Fall adjustments (if necessary) are due by 9 PM EST on the Wednesday.
Fall supply center counts will be posted by Midnight EST on the same Wednesday.
Fall Builds and/or Disband orders are due by 9 PM EST on the Thursday
Fall Final Positions will be posted by Midnight EST on the same Thursday
The Starting Date for Game One is Tuesday January 01, 2002
You will have two weeks to conduct your opening negotiations.
Spring 1901 Moves are due Tuesday January 15, 2002
After Spring 1901 the negotiation periods are one week intervals.
Fall 1901 Moves are due Tuesday January 22, 2002
Spring 1902 Moves are due Tuesday January 29, 2002
Fall 1902 Moves are due Tuesday February 5, 2002
... etc.
As the game progresses the weekly schedule may be changed (sped up), depending on the remaining players wishes (and mine too, I guess).
A note regarding adjustments and builds/disbands:
The rules state that adjustments and builds/disbands must be done without a period of diplomacy. In other words when the game is played in person the players must submit their adjustments and build/disband orders without an opportunity to communicate with other players. In an on-line game such as ours it is not possible to control what happens between the time I post the preliminary results and the time when the adjustments and builds/disbands are due (the next night). So, if you wish to discuss your adjustments and builds/disbands with the other Great Powers please feel free to do so.

Kudos to nicholmere for her astute game management -- I am sure we will see more of the same in weeks to come.

| | Bonjour-
Well, I know little of France and it's military history-guess I'll go bone up (I know they make wonderful wine-I guess I could just get drunk and go from there )
Is there another link to the rules for Diplomacy? I can't get those to download for some reason. I know it's probably my computer!

I'll see what else I can find. First, though, did you try going directly to the HASBRO website? If the problem was with the archive site, then maybe you'll have better luck with the game site. When you go to the above link you should see a bunch of drop down menus, go to the second group (A - E), and find the DIPLOMACY selection. That should automatically start the download.
Please let me know if that works or does not work. If it does not then I'll send you an e-mail with my copy of the rules, I want to make sure you have time to read them. As long as your system can read PDF documents it should work.
Did you look at the rules link posted in the original DIPLOMACY thread? I think they may be an earlier version, but if you're having problems with the links from HASBRO then please go ahead and take a look at the other link while you're waiting for me to send you my copy.
Has anyone else had problems downloading the rules?

| | | As Grobnik-Klatuu, Chief Observer for the Martian Empire, I shall watch the proceedings through my high-powered telescope on the surface of the Red Planet. You know, no one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that your world was being watched keenly and closely by an intelligence greater than man's and yet as mortal as your own; that as men busied themselves about their various diplomatic concerns you were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water...

MNM :p | Ich, Roob von Boob , chairman of Danube Ballroom Society, take this occasion to greet the astute and well-dressed neighbor. We are, shall I say waltzing away from Hub’s(burg) tradition of highly charged offensive line (and floating of the puck/puke?), especially when it comes to Holly(wood) Empire.
Frankly, we have no interest in fashion as long as the flow of goulash and Tokai is uninterrupted...
Ave MNM!

of course, the we do have a rather spotty history of being occupied by invading forces. I aim to change that.
and I figured out why I couldn't download or view the rules. SOMEBODY took Adobe reader off the computer-apparently he felt we didn't use it
