JERUSALEM POST: US long distance carrier offers free hour of calls to Israel
Well, isn't this sweet?
The American long distance carier, Cucumber Communications, is offering a free hour of telephone service to Israel, to help thousands of Americans contact relatives in the Jewish state.
In a statement, spokeswman Chana Nestlebaum maintains that the company is responding to "a whole new level of concern" raised by the war in Iraq for the wellbeing of Israelis.
Israelis have been on the alert since the March 20 onset of the US and British-led war.
Although officials assess that the threat of facing an Iraqi attack are small, Israeli citizens are advised to carry around gas masks and keep a sealed room in their home, in the event that Saddam Hussein does unleash an attack as an act of desperation to rally the Arab world behind him.
The free calls are offered via a calling card called the Chazak Card. Chazak, pronounced with a hard "h" as in "chutzpah," is Hebrew for "strength."
Cucumber may be contacted at 1-888-9-CHAZAK (1-888-924-2925).
No word yet if long-distance carrier Sour Grapes And Rotten Apples is offering an hour of free long distance to the 970 "country" code.
