| | Last morsel of ANY remaining respect for Bush stolen by Janjaweed | | Hey! The war on terrorism means never having to say you're sorry!
Wonder if Hitler is smiling in Hell as he watches the Four Horsemen leave the paddocks? Quote: |
The Times said U.S. government officials had confirmed that the CIA flew the chief of Sudan's intelligence agency to Washington last week for secret meetings, sealing Khartoum's sensitive and previously veiled partnership with the administration.
| Shouldn't somebody's spidey sense be tingling here? A man just a few months ago we considered part of systematic genocidal acts is a good friend now because he's giving up a few Al Qaeda? Like his country isn't teeming with them? Child slavery? Systematic rape a la ethnic cleansing. Isn't this like the world giving up Poland?
Remember how I said "well, at least the US is doing something for Sudan"
You know, for a man who believes in the Judgement Day, how can he live with himself as he condemns more innocent Darfurians to famine, torture and death by giving any credence to truly evil men? I don't think Jesus would approve of this, Mr. President. The meek shall inherit the earth, Mr. President. And they'll remember you were in a position to help them. But your own personal agenda got in the way.

It is depressing, but the United States has supported dictators for many years in many different countries. As long as they feel the dictators are on our side, they support them. They've supported other dictators who've violated human rights (the Shah of Iran, for example.) Democrats and Republicans alike have supported them. We've sometimes even gone to war to defend them.
But I think we would all like to read the whole article, disillusioning as it surely will be. |

| | Re Last morsel of ANY remaining respect for Bush stolen by Janjaweed | | Darn. I wonder what happened.
Well, you can google "sudan bush administration counterterrorism" and get a whole slew. But here's one that speaks more about the sticky situation in Sudan that brings up the Bush buddy system with Sudan. Quote: |
For its part, the Bush administration no longer seems willing to put pressure on its allies over Darfur; over the past few weeks the State Department has shied away from calling the situation a "genocide," a word that Colin Powell had been hurling around with authority last year. More recently, Mark Leon Goldberg of the American Prospect reported that the White House was trying to thwart the Darfur Accountability Act from passing Congress, an act which would accelerate AU deployment, authorize an expansion of the UN peacekeeping force, slap sanctions on Khartoum, and use international airpower to enforce a no-fly zone over Darfur and prevent Sudanese gunships from strafing villages. (In other words, a decent first step, if ultimately inadequate.) One possible explanation for the shift: The Los Angeles Times' Ken Silverstein reported last week that the U.S. appears to be gaining valuable counterterrorism support from, among other things, Sudan's intelligence chief Salan Abdallah Gosh, who happens to be overseeing the genocidal war against Darfur.

| | Re Last morsel of ANY remaining respect for Bush stolen by Janjaweed | | NYT's Kristof wrote on Bush's backing down from his previous and near solo call for action against Sudan. Quote:
This Thursday marks Holocaust Remembrance Day. The best memorial would be for more Americans to protest about this administration's showing the same lack of interest in Darfur that F.D.R. showed toward the genocide of Jews. Ultimately, public pressure may force Mr. Bush to respond to Darfur, but it looks as if he will have to be dragged kicking and screaming by Republicans and Democrats alike.
Granted, Darfur defies easy solutions. But Mr. Bush was outspoken and active this spring in another complex case, that of Terry Schiavo. If only Mr. Bush would exert himself as much to try to save the lives of the two million people driven from their homes in Darfur.
