Ronald Reagan trumps Washington, Lincoln and Franklin?

Apparently, a lot of Republicans watch the Discovery Channel. Last night, they had the final vote for The Greatest American (ever!). Ronald Reagan beat Ben Franklin, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington for the honor.

Granted, when I saw that the list include Ellen Degeneres, a football player (can't remember who, that's how great he was) and ... gasp ... Michael Jackson, I knew this wasn't a very serious audience poll.

But even taking it with a spoonful of sugar, realizing it is just for fun, I still can't fathom that Bill Clinton, Oprah and George W. Bush would make the Top 10 beating out Teddy Roosevelt, FDR ...even JFK! Say nothing of America's great writers, composers, thinkers, educators. I mean, George Washington Carver has done more for the course of American history than Oprah. Sacagawea had a greater impact on our history than Oprah!

I'm not at all suprised! Granted the people who watch Discovery are at a different level than those who watch Nick at Night or hopefully even Fox, but .....
I'm not suprised that the person chosen was somewhat contemporary, but older contemporary. I didn't watch the series, and I don't know how people were nominated or elected. I'm just so glad Jacko didn't take it!

sniff, sniff...thanks. I feel better now.

I just never thought that a concept like American Idol would ever turn into revisionist history.

Gah - this is the channel which ran a series on dragons (a "what if they'd been real" presentation) and I know a number of their viewers who were convinced they were watching actual scientific accounts of real dragon evidence. And now these people are convinced dragons exist. I kid you not.

Discovery channel? The only discovery is that their channel is more interested in flash than substance.

Oh, and on Reagan -- he's having a popular resurgence ever since Saddam said how much he liked the Gipper.

What? Dragons DON'T exist?

And unicorns? Don't they exist?

Please, don't even begin to tell me gnomes don't exist.

My apologies -- it was on Animal Planet and not the Discovery Channel.

The forum where we were discussing it was on the discovery.com website because Animal Planet is run by the same organization.
