``If there is really any evidence of insider trading, then he's in very serious trouble, and so is his party,'' said Gary Jacobson, professor of political science at the University of California in San Diego. ``It adds another brick to Democrats' argument that Republicans are corrupt.''

The probes add to the ethical questions hanging over congressional Republicans. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, a Texas Republican, was admonished three times by the House ethics committee last year and soon faces a new probe into his overseas trips funded by Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Last week, the White House's former top procurement official, David Safavian, was arrested on charges of obstructing justice in a criminal probe of Abramoff.

What began as an inquiry into Mr. Scanlon and Mr. Abramoff's lobbying has widened to a corruption investigation centering mainly on Republican lawmakers who came to power as part of the conservative revolution of the 1990's. At least six members of Congress are in the scope of the inquiry, with an additional 12 or so former aides being examined to determine whether they gave Mr. Abramoff legislative help in exchange for campaign donations, lavish trips and gifts.
It may be difficult for prosecutors to translate certain elements of the case into indictments. Bribery, corruption and conspiracy cases are notoriously difficult to prove. But the potential dimensions are enormous, and the investigation, at a time of turmoil for the Bush administration, threatens to add a new knot of problems for the party heading into the elections next year.

The Governor-Elect of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands says he will cooperate with federal authorities in the ongoing investigation of Rep. Tom Delay and former Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff, whom he once described as his “close friends.” |

Capital Athletic Foundation, a charity run by disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff now at the center of an influence-peddling investigation on Capitol Hill, told the IRS it gave away more than $330,000 in grants in 2002 to four other charities that say they never received the money.
The largest grant the foundation listed in its 2002 tax filing was for $300,000 to P'TACH of New York, a nonprofit that helps Jewish children with learning disabilities.
"We've never received a $300,000 gift, not in our 28 years," a surprised Rabbi Burton Jaffa, P'TACH's national director, told the Austin American-Statesman. "It would have been gone by now. I guess I would have been able to pay some teachers on time."

Jack Abramoff pleaded guilty to three felony counts in Washington today as part of a settlement with federal prosecutors, ending an intense, months-long negotiation over whether the Republican lobbyist would testify against his former colleagues, people involved with the case said.
Mr. Abramoff, 46, pleaded guilty to conspiracy, fraud, and tax evasion, setting the stage for prosecutors to begin using him as a cooperating witness against his former business and political colleagues...
Mr. Abramoff has been talking to investigators in the corruption case for many months, said participants in the case, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation. They said he had provided a full picture of what evidence he could offer against other suspects.
His participation in Washington has taken place mostly below the radar ...
Now, after more than two years of investigations, prosecutors have developed a list of at least a dozen lawmakers, congressional aides and lobbyists whose work appears suspect and who are now at the core of the case. With Mr. Abramoff's cooperation, the Justice Department will have a potentially critical witness to alleged patterns of corruption or bribery within the Republican leadership ranks ... | http://nytimes.com/2006/01/03/politi...rtner=homepage |

| | FWIW, Abramoff did not get involved with just Republicans. The shakeout is going to be rather intersting, starting with, say, Harry Reid. |

| Oh, I agree with that.
Abramoff was a Republican fundraiser. He didn't raise money for Democrats.
So we'll see who is caught up in this. |

| | He raised money for a lot more than Republicans, Emma. You'll notice that most of the reports will even state that, they'll say that he mostly raised money for Republicans. Even my local Air America affiliate (760AM) was talking about it this morning. |

| | Yeah, he donated money to some Dem campaigns. Woop dee doo.
Watch for Republicans to say again and again in the weeks ahead that this is a bipartisan scandal. Just like whenever there's a vote with all of the Republicans in the House voting in a bloc and one or two Zell Miller types voting along with them -- it's a bipartisan vote. |
